The Worst Christmas Ever

I had the worst Christmas of my life in 1978. Our whole family came home — my 4 brothers and sister — and our mother was dying. Mother was only 51 years old and I knew that we all had the thought that she was going to rally from her battle with cancer, as she had continued to do during the past 5 years. But when I got home from law school and saw her, I knew.
We all knew. And there was nothing we could do.
One of the worst parts about it, was that I was 26 years old and had no way of knowing how to communicate how I was feeling. None of us did. We didn’t know how to talk about how we were feeling. I knew we were all frightened, I knew we were all incredibly sad, but we simply didn’t have the tools to deal with any of that. The fact that mother was dying was the pink elephant in the room that nobody was acknowledging or talking about. As I look back, it was one of the most surreal and awful experiences of my life.
One month later, my mother died.
This week I’ve had many people talk about how difficult it is to be with their families, especially their mothers, during the holiday season. There is a part of me that wants to scream “at least you have a mother to have difficulty with!” I don’t do it, of course, but her loss influences my ideas about families and relationships. The bottom line for me is I believe that we have to do everything we can to maintain love and peace in these sacred relationships. So my message to you at this season is that if you have anyone in your life with whom you are estranged, please do something about it. Whether it’s a parent or a sibling or a child or someone who was once a good friend, don’t let this holiday season go by without taking some sort of step to shift the energy of the situation. Holding onto grudges, upset, maintaining that you were the one who was “right”, will get you nothing except more pain and disconnection.
In my own life, during this past year, I had the situation where a chance meeting led to my coming together with someone from whom I’d been estranged, where we both simply said, “I’m sorry”. We didn’t explain, we didn’t defend our positions, we just said “I’m sorry”, we hugged each other and there were tears. I can’t tell you what a burden that lifted off my shoulders.
I understand there may be situations where it’s not possible to actually contact the person, the situation may still be too volatile. Or the person may no longer be with us. You can still effect healing in these situations using a very simple practice called ho’oponopono. It is an ancient practice of forgiveness and reconciliation, and comes from the kahunas in Hawaii. It has come into Western consciousness again through the work of Dr. Hew Lynn.
Ho’oponopono is a very simple, but amazingly transformative, process. Here is what you do: Think about the person or the situation and say a few times:
I love you
I’m sorry
Please forgive me
Thank you
That’s it. You don’t even have to feel the things you are saying for this to work. As my dad would have said, that’s the good part about it. Simply thinking or saying these words can transform situations in incredible ways. I’ve seen it happen over and over again.
If you would like to read more about why this works, the thinking behind it, more about Dr. Lynn, etc., go ahead and Google it and you’ll find all kinds of information. What I’m talking to you about is the peace that comes from shifting around a situation of disharmony and angst. You know that the highest part of you wants to live in peace and harmony with everyone in your life. If there’s someone where that’s not happening, please take advantage of the special energies that are available to us during this holiday season and do something about it.
And keep on remembering that forgiveness isn’t about the other person. It’s about you. Your peace and harmony. It’s the best gift you can give yourself.

Jamie found peace with her Soul Adventure
“I felt a deep, deep calling to go to Sedona. There was one particular thing that was weighing on me that I was hoping to heal and clear out. I was literally blown away by the level of healing that took place. It was all I could have asked for and then some. I had tried everything in the world I knew to have peace with this issue, but it just wasn’t happening. During my Retreat I was able to find a place for my experiences and feelings and resolve things on a soul level. The healing has been profound and lasting. Thank you!”

What complaining about the weather says about you

We’re at that time of the year when people complain about the weather. As it starts to get colder, and things like snow and ice start to happen, it seems to me that a huge number of people incessantly complain about the weather.
So let me tell you what complaining about the weather says about you. And I feel that I can say this to you because I was someone (who until I finally understood what I was doing), used to complain about the weather constantly. I grew up in Iowa and then lived in Nebraska for 30 years. If you haven’t been to Iowa or Nebraska, I will tell you it’s very cold in the winters (as low as 20 below zero in January and I’m not talking about wind chill, I’m talking actual air temperature). In the summer it’s hot and humid, very often over 100 degrees, and sticky. Omaha, where I lived, is also incredibly windy, it seems like the wind is blowing all the time.
So certainly, there were and are legitimate reasons for people (including myself) to complain about the weather. But something happened to me a number of years ago that changed all that. I’ll never forget the day. I was sitting in my kitchen looking out at the beautiful trees swaying in the wind. Suddenly I was filled with this overwhelming feeling of happiness and contentment. Although it was really cold outside (and I’m pretty sure I had been complaining about it earlier in the day), I was suddenly knocked over by the perfection in everything, including the weather.
I had been reading and studying and believed in my head the idea that all is well, that we’re all creating our own reality, that what we think about we get more of and that we attract what we are thinking and talking about. I knew it on a mental level and I believed it, but I had never had a direct experience of it like I had in that moment. And along with many other realizations, I was understanding for the first time what was happening when I was complaining about the weather:
•    I wasn’t taking responsibility for my own creation
•    I was energizing the kind of weather I didn’t want and creating more of it
•    I was putting myself in a bad mood
•    I was putting myself in a bad energy
•    I wasn’t accepting what is
•    I was pushing against what is
•    I was bringing in other complaining people
•    I was lowering my energetic vibration
So if you want to know what complaining about the weather says about you, just substitute yourself for me and put it in present tense (“I am not taking responsibility for my own creation”, “I am energizing the kind of weather I don’t want and creating more of it”). Because that’s what you’re doing every time you complain about the weather – you aren’t taking responsibility, you’re lowering your energetic vibrational tone and you’re feeling bad. Wow! It is the trifecta of how to feel terrible a large part of the time.
When this awareness happened, suddenly the weather in Omaha (even the so called “bad” weather) didn’t bother me anymore. In fact, I liked it.
Now some of you may have the reaction of “well, Debra, it’s easy for you to say that, you moved from Nebraska to Sedona where you have great weather almost every day”.  You’re right, it’s true, but I somehow think that it wouldn’t have been possible for me to move to Sedona if this awareness hadn’t happened. On an energetic level, I was completely aligned vibrationally with cold, harsh weather. When that finally lifted, it was possible for me to move to and live in a place that has fantastic weather. Does that make sense? It’s a real paradox, but it’s what I believe.
At least, it’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
I’ve been in the Midwest recently and experienced cold weather and snow and even cold rain. I loved all of it. It feels bracing and stimulating and invigorating to me.
I came back to Sedona and it’s sunny and warm and, of course, I love that too.
So the bottom line is, how you talk and think about the weather is a huge reflection for pretty much everything in your life. Are you happy about it and embracing it? Or are you using it as an excuse to keep yourself unhappy, complaining and generally negative? It’s amazing how these seemingly small things are always a reflection of something much larger.
I invite you to notice this week how you’re thinking and talking about the weather. When someone else starts to complain, what are you going to say? Are you going to join in? Or are you going to say something in a loving way to shift that negative energy?
If you find that the way you talk and think about the weather (and everything else) is generally negative and complaining and you can’t seem to stop it, it might indicate that there is something deeper going on. It might mean you are in serious need of a Sedona Soul Adventures retreat. The awareness that I spoke about above started happening after I started coming to Sedona and doing my own personal healing with the amazing practitioners who are drawn here to do their work. I know that this awareness was a direct result of that. All of this was part of the unfolding that led to the founding of Sedona Soul Adventures over 12 years ago.
When you do a Sedona Soul Adventures retreat, we spend a lot of time talking to you before you come (or both of you if it’s a couple). You speak with one of our Angel Guides and they will really get to the heart of the matter of what’s going on, what’s happening and what you would like to have happen. They’ll then design a retreat that is customized for you, consisting of one-on-one sessions with our amazing practitioners. The results are really nothing short of astounding  – “life-changing and transformational” are the words that most of our people say, for example,

The Moon is Void of Course today (December 12) at 7:48 AM (Eastern) until December 12 at 10:19 AM (Eastern) and the Moon is in Leo. Don’t make any important decisions while the Moon is Void of Course. For a deeper explanation of Moon Void of Course Click Here.

Leo is the lion and during this time we will feel strong and confident. We will have a desire to feel beautiful and to be perceived as beautiful. Our inner child is connected with the Leo Moon, so it is a wonderful time to love ourselves a little more deeply.

This is a time when creativity will really flow, so do everything you can to nurture that. A wonderful time not only for creative pursuits, but creative thinking. Leo (and the Sun) always want to be the center of attention, so resist the misconception that “everything revolves around you”.  It’s a wonderful time for parties and celebrations. Be especially careful of your heart and spine at this time.

And always remember, Astrology and other tools are simply that – tools. It’s good information to have, but it does not mean that this is the determining factor or controlling your life. We all have free will in all the choices that we make.  I like to look at it as good information that can be transcended.

The Moon is Void of Course today (December 9) at 7:14 PM (Eastern) until December 9 at 10:14 PM (Eastern) and the Moon is in Cancer.

The Moon is Void of Course today (December 9) at 7:14 PM (Eastern) until December 9 at 10:14 PM (Eastern) and the Moon is in Cancer. Don’t make any important decisions while the Moon is Void of Course. For a deeper explanation of Moon Void of Course Click Here.

Cancer has to do with emotions and our homes and our families. The Moon’s home base is Cancer, so the Moon feels the most at home here. When the Moon is in Cancer it is a time of deep emotions. It’s a time when we can connect with people on a deeper level, especially with our families. It is a time when we yearn for peace and serenity. It is not a good time for change, as we will resist any kind of change during this period and we will be more attune with things that are familiar (notice that the root of the word “family” is “familiar”).

Anything you would want to do around the home now would be favored, especially making your home a more comfortable place. Also anything having to do with helping your family or nurturing your family is very beneficial. Family get-togethers can be very harmonious during this time, especially if “neediness” is not involved. People can tend to be a little more secretive and moody during this time and also overly-protective. This can be a very healing time and a wonderful time to really connect with  our deepest desires and what it is that drives us. Be very careful during this time about your stomach, gall bladder, and lymphatic system. Avoid over-eating, especially “comfort” foods. Give your family a big hug and tell them you love them.

And always remember, Astrology and other tools are simply that – tools. It’s good information to have, but it does not mean that this is the determining factor or controlling your life. How to be ‘Happy' all through the day

I have the song “Happy” as the ringtone on my phone. I’ve had it for about 8 months, and I have to tell you, it’s been life changing. You know how you get a phone call and the caller ID comes up and you see who it is and if it’s someone you’re not anxious to talk to, or worse, someone that you know is calling about something you don’t want to hear about, how your instant reaction is something like “ick, I don’t want to take this call, but I have to take this call, and I can’t avoid this any longer, yada, yada, yada?”
That whole reaction thing simply doesn’t happen to me anymore. No matter who is calling, no matter what I ‘know’ they’re going to tell me, I hear that music and I’m just happy. I actually think someone could call me and tell me my house just burned down and (after I knew Daisy and Katie Kat were alright) I would say something like, “wow, that’s interesting”. No matter who it is on the other end, I’m ‘Happy’ to talk to them. And if it’s someone I love and know I’m going to enjoy talking to, then I’m REALLY HAPPY.
Now I’ve just discovered that I’m actually waiting a little bit to answer the phone so that I can listen to as much of the song as possible without the call going into voicemail. The other day, I was in a restaurant and the phone rang and the song started so I quickly answered it. My friend on the other end said “Wow, you answered on the first ring, you never answer on the first ring”. I realized I’m letting the song do it’s magic each time, and it works every time.
I mean, listen to the lyrics:
Because I’m happy…
Come along if you feel like a room without a roof
Because I’m happy…
Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth
Because I’m happy…
Clap along if you know what happiness is to you
Because I’m happy…
Clap along if you feel like that’s what you wanna do
Can you imagine what it would be like to always feel like a room without a roof?
Just constantly expanding?
My heart fills up every time I hear that.
It continues to be so amazing to me how some small thing can make such a difference in how we’re feeling and our general mood. When we are happy, it’s a whole lot easier to stay happy. And think about it, happiness and sadness and joy and grief are all just energy coursing through us. They feel good or they feel bad, but the wonderful part is, we can learn how to utilize them and move them and make them bigger when they feel good; similarly, when they start to feel bad, we can spend some time moving that energy back into the good feeling space.
I spent 5 days at Thanksgiving with my brother and his wife at their home, which is on Lake Eufala in Oklahoma (a really beautiful spot), plus my niece and nephew who are amazing people (both attorneys). They brought their children – my nephew has a 10 year old son and my niece has two little boys, ages 20 months and 4 years. You can imagine the energy that was flowing through this bunch!
Shortly after my brother Steve picked me up at the airport in Tulsa and we started the 1-1/2 hour ride, someone called me and my ‘Happy’ ringtone went off. My brother went nuts. He told me that Jack (the 20 month old) is barely talking but when he gets into the car he says “Happy”, which translates into “I want you to play the ‘Happy’ song over and over on your car stereo”. Steve says there have been times when he’s played the song 10 times in a row for Jack. Steve and I arranged that as soon as Jack was on my lap, Steve would call me, the ‘Happy’ ring ton would play and we would watch Jack’s reaction.
Well, of course, little Jack’s eyes got huge and for the rest of the week-end he would see me and suddenly say “Happy” and I would play the song for him (usually at least twice). The music seemed to have an almost hypnotic effect on him, his eyes would literally glaze over. At one point in one of the evenings, I was holding him and singing the song into his ear for over an hour and he finally went to sleep in my arms. Oh my goddess, talk about flowing pure, positive energy.
This is not an advertisement for the ringtone, ‘Happy’, but if that song gets to you (like it gets to me and Jack), you might want to consider it! Or some other song or music that really moves you. To turn what is often an annoyance into a joyful experience has been a game changer for me. It might be for you too. Try it.
And speaking of game changers and living your life in joy and ‘Happy’, if that’s not happening for you, you might want to think about doing something bigger and deeper than just getting a new ringtone. Of course, I’m talking about doing a Sedona Soul Adventures retreat. It is the fastest, most elegant and perfect way to bring you out of disconnection and funk and back into the connection and joy that is your birthright. It’s time for you to get ‘Happy’.
Wishing you a week filled with ‘Happy’.
Many Blessings,

Courtney says “Sedona Soul Adventures is like a recipe for a happy soul”
“Sedona Soul Adventures is like a recipe for a happy soul. Each practitioner served an important purpose during the journey, and much like cooking a special sauce or soup, the ingredients mix together sometimes so perfectly you cannot pinpoint a particular flavor, but you know it’s finished. There are so many times I’m trying to recall one specific ‘a-ha’ moment and it seems to meld into one fabulous, soul-changing experience. It’s just what the soul ordered! Thank you!”

The Moon is Void of Course today (December 7) at 4:51 AM (Eastern) until December 7 at 12:34 PM (Eastern) and the Moon is in Gemini. Don’t make any important decisions while the Moon is Void of Course. For a deeper explanation of Moon Void of Course Click Here.

Gemini is the symbol of the Twin, so during this time you (and everyone else) will see both sides of everything. This can be good in some situations, but it can lead to indecision and people changing their minds for seemingly no reason.

Gemini is the most intellectual and mental of the signs, so it is a good time for writing and communication. Also a good time to do research (but remember, don’t make any decisions right now based on your research). Also a very favorable time for negotiating. Because things can be so changeable, it is also a good time for people being flexible. An excellent time to take a short trip.

Taurus is the bull and although this is a time when people can be very stubborn, it is also a time when we are attracted to calm and comfort., especially in our homes and our surroundings. This is a time when we tend toward the familiar and any kind of drama (especially with family members)  will be especially unwelcome.

This is a time when we yearn for and crave serenity and peace more than at any other time. It is also a time when we will feel more patient. Money and financial aspects are highlighted now, although when the Moon is Void of Course we may feel a need to possess things or possess other people. Be especially careful of your head or eyes. It’s not a good time to go to the dentist. Also, be very mindful of your ears and throat and your thyroid.

The Moon is Void of Course today (December 2) at 9:42 PM (Eastern) until December 3 at 12:15 AM (Eastern) and the Moon is in Aries.

The Moon is Void of Course today (December 2) at 9:42 PM (Eastern) until December 3 at 12:15 AM (Eastern) and the Moon is in Aries. Don’t make any important decisions while the Moon is Void of Course. For a deeper explanation of Moon Void of Course Click Here.
When the Moon is in Aries, it can be a very emotional time. You will feel a lot of enthusiasm and you can feel a real urge to do new things. This is a good time to think about new projects, renovations, etc., just wait until the Moon has moved out of Void of Course to make any final decisions. It’s possible for you to be more impulsive, but also very independent.
The Aries moon deeply affects the subconscious, so this is a very good time to go within. A good time to meditate, do yoga, anything that makes you feel more connected to the higher part of yourself. Aries also affects the workplace, so it is a good time to think about future projects, just don’t make final decisions. You might also find yourself tempted to make rash decisions during this time, so be on the look-out for that. Aries also stimulates the metabolism, so it’s a very good time to do physical exercise, just be careful to not over-do. If you are feeling frustration during this time, just take some deep breaths and know that this too shall pass!
And always remember, Astrology and other tools are simply that – tools. It’s good information to have, but it does not mean that this is the determining factor or controlling your life.
