Coffee, butter, coconut oil and my 108 yr old grandma who had 20 children
If I told you there was a way to have your morning coffee do all this:
• help you lose weight
• give you more energy
• increase brain function
• make your skin incredibly soft
• and just make you feel better
would you think I was crazy?
I love coffee. I love the smell of it. I love drinking it. I love sitting around in a coffee shop and drinking coffee and talking with my friends, it’s one of my favorite things to do.
I think some of it is that I have such fond memories of my parents sitting around and drinking coffee. They had six children, and this was their time together. My father owned bars and nightclubs, so he worked at night. We would come home from school and my parents would be sitting around, drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes and laughing and their intimate time together would end when the six of us would come racing in from school. But I know from the looks on their faces that they were happy and relaxed and very much together. They drank coffee all day long and into the night. And they both slept like rocks.
I was having a glass of wine with my facialist a few weeks ago (Stacy — I love her!) and she was telling me about her newest discovery — Bulletproof Coffee (it’s actually been around for awhile — where have I been?) Stacy was telling me what a difference this was making in her skin. I tried it and have been drinking it for the past 4 weeks. Oh my Goddess, it’s incredible.
So here’s the deal. You use coffee, plus coconut oil plus butter from grass fed cows (the recipe is below). Now before you have a reaction, let me tell you this is incredible and amazing and almost unbelievable. But first let me tell you about my epiphany. As I started thinking about this, I realized:
This is exactly what my grandmother (who lived to be 108 and had 20 children!) used to do.
She drank coffee, she ate real butter and she ate lard (substitute coconut oil) and she had real cream in her coffee. She also ate red meat and lots of fresh vegetables (both of which were produced on their large farm).
She lived to be 108.
She had 20 children (my dad was #19). She was the Catholic Mother of the Year in 1968.
She was one of the happiest people I have ever known.
My grandmother, Antoinette Stangl (Nettie to the people who loved her, of whom there were many) was one of the most amazing human beings I have ever known. Everyone adored her. She got married at 19 and for the first 1-1/2 years she didn’t get pregnant and they thought something was wrong. She then got pregnant and had 20 children over the next 26 years. No twins or triplets, just single births. My dad was #19. She told me once she felt her best when she was pregnant. She adored her children and her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren (there were 4 generations at the time of her passing!)
My great-uncle Michael (one of my 4 brothers is named for him) came over to visit the day after Grandma had child #15 and said to my Grandfather, “I wanted to see Nettie when she wasn’t pregnant”. My Grandfather replied, “You’re too late!”
My father was the youngest boy and he and Grandma were especially close. She lived in a tiny town in Iowa, about 2 hours away, but came to visit very often. One of my fondest memories is spending Friday nights watching the Gillette Friday Night Fights with Grandma. We would eat popcorn and drink orange juice and Grandma got very excited. My grandfather had passed away at the age of 82 by this time.
When we would go to visit Grandma, it was the only time we were allowed to drink coffee. She had these heavy white mugs and I would put in a ton of cream and sugar, but I would feel very grown up sitting at the huge dining room table and drinking my coffee.
So as you can see, I have many wonderful associations with coffee. Over the past few years, my go-to drink has been a dry cappuccino from Starbucks, but I have changed my ways! Since I started drinking Bulletproof coffee, my life has changed. My already soft skin, is much softer, I have much more energy throughout the day and I would swear I have a clarity in my brain that wasn’t there before. I got his book, “The Bulletproof Diet”, and I’m loving the read. He was a dot-com multi-millionaire in his twenties and weighed 300 pounds. Like me, he tried every diet and exercise program out there, lost weight, then gained it all back plus more until he spent over $300,000 to find out what worked for him. He’s now a normal weight and has six pack abs, without doing lots of exercise. I’m reading this book and I don’t want to lose weight, I’m just loving reading this. The information he has on weight loss is what I totally believe in and he’s got great information on sleep, exercise and brain function.
One of the points he makes is that a huge amount of coffee out there (even really expensive custom blends and organic blends) have mold because of the way they’re processed. Mold has disastrous effects on people (especially on your brain) and he has virtually eliminated mold from the Bulletproof Coffee.
The basic part is about the coffee. So here’s the recipe.
You can use any type of coffee (but after reading the book, I’m going for mold free, so I’m using the Bulletproof Coffee and it’s delicious – and please understand this is not an advertisement and I have no connection with the Bulletproof brand, I’m just a fan.)
With your cup of coffee add:
– One tablespoon of coconut oil (I’ve now worked up to 2 tablespoons)
– One tablespoon of butter that is from grass fed cows (I use Kerry butter that I get at Whole Foods)
– I use a little bit of real cream (just like my grandmother)
– Blend it in a blender for 20-30 seconds; it helps the oil and butter mix and makes it frothy)
So, again before you have a reaction to what you think is eating too much fat, please read his book to read the latest research about how good fat truly is good for you. And if you prefer to not drink coffee, this also works in tea and smoothies.

We need another roommate for the Bali trip, September 12-25
We sent out an email this week saying we needed a roommate for the Bali trip. We got one within 3 hours and then within a few more hours another person decided to go and now she needs a roommate!
