Freaked out, elephants on Brooklyn Bridge and flying high – don't let fear stop you
Have you ever let fear prevent you from doing something really important? I know I have and I’ll bet you have too.
I’m reading the most interesting book right now and it’s reminded me about things about human nature — that humans get freaked out over things they don’t understand and simply because of that, no matter how fabulous the new thing is, they will keep it out of their lives in a weird effort to be “safe”.
When I tell you what I’m reading, it’s probably not going to sound very interesting. It’s “The Last Days of Night” and it’s the story of when electricity first started to be used in the United States and specifically about the struggle between Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla and George Westinghouse over who invented the light bulb (at one time they had over 300 court cases going). But the part of the book that I find completely fascinating is that for many years the American people were so freaked out by electricity that they refused to even think about having it in their homes. They saw that some people had been electrocuted, they knew what a powerful force it was and the reaction of the man on the street was “no thanks, I’m not having that in my house, it’ll kill me”.
Can you imagine your life now without electricity? What’s even more interesting is that there were many scientists at the time who were saying that it was absolutely impossible to harness electricity so that it could be brought into everyday use. One of the really bizarre things that happened during this war between the AC (alternating current) and DC (direct current) industrial giants, is that the AC people got the New York legislature to use their opponent’s DC generator for the world’s first electric chair. Proving conclusively that this stuff will kill you!
When elephants walked over the Brooklyn Bridge
In 1883 when the Brooklyn Bridge opened, it was the only bridge linking Brooklyn and New York. It was the largest suspension bridge ever built and people were completely freaked out and wouldn’t use the bridge because they were afraid it wouldn’t hold. They believed that if too many people and horses and buggies were on the bridge, that it would collapse. Finally, the New York City officials arranged for P.T. Barnum, the well-known circus showman, to have 21 elephants and 17 camels walk across the bridge, finally dispelling this fear.
How Howard Hughes helped people freaked out over flying
Of course, when air travel started to be a reality, people were completely freaked out. It was just too dangerous! Worse, in the beginning the only planes weren’t jets that could fly at high altitudes, they were small planes flying at low altitudes with lots of turbulence. If you’ve ever bumped around in a puddle jumper, you know exactly what I mean. One of the reasons Howard Hughes got involved with TWA was because he wanted to develop commercial planes that could fly at high altitudes so that people wouldn’t be so freaked out about flying and that large numbers of people would start to fly. Can you imagine if your entire flight between Los Angeles and Chicago felt like the take off and landing? Instead, the planes climb to around 36,000 ft and (for the most part) the ride is smooth. Howard Hughes was one of the people who helped Americans stop freaking out about flying.
Even now, many people are very fearful about flying, in spite of the fact that flying is much more safe than driving. According to anxieties.com (what a name!), flying is 19 times safer than driving!
All of us have irrational fears. Some are cute and endearing, but some are debilitating. Fear is an interesting thing — it’s very important and worthwhile when it’s telling us to be careful about something (don’t jump off the cliff), but if we allow it to control us, we can end up living a life that robs us of joy and happiness.
For most of us, it’s persistent low level fear that creates the problems in our lives. Fear of speaking to that person who might end up being your soul mate, fear of trying something new, fear of doing something to change your life because it might not end up changing it. I love the bumper sticker that says “What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?”
Wow! – what would you do? That’s a big one, isn’t it?
If there is something you would do, but you’re afraid of doing it, PLEASE don’t let your fear hold you back. I’m not saying do something rash and stupid, I’m saying don’t let your fears hold you back. If there’s something big you want to do, like starting your own business because you need to follow your soul purpose, do all the homework and put all your ducks in order, but start taking steps toward reaching your dream.
Or maybe you’re like I was before I first came to Sedona. I had no idea what my soul purpose was, I just knew something was very wrong with my life. I was unhappy and frustrated. I felt completely stuck. I knew I had to do something, but I had no idea what it was.
Then I came out to Sedona for the first time (this was in January, 1999). When I came I was burned out, stressed out, 40 pounds overweight, $50,000 in debt and doing work I hated (I was a divorce attorney). I came here for 3 days and got the message I had to change my life. Once I got home, as soon as I made the definite decision to leave my law practice, $50,000 dropped out of the sky. I started coming to Sedona to do my own healing work, moved here in 2001, started Sedona Soul Adventures in 2002, dropped 40 pounds (without diet or exercise) and now do the work of my dreams (I talk about all of this in my new book that’s coming out in October, “The Journey to Happy”).
Were there times when I was afraid? Yes. Were there times when my family thought I was crazy? Yes. Am I very glad all this happened? Yes! Yes! Yes!
Don’t let your fears stop you. Let them help you. There’s lots of information in that fear, it’s telling you where the gold is for you, it’s telling you where your biggest healing is.
Let us help you move through your fears and have them start working for you. We are so great at doing that! Connect with us today and talk to one of our Angel Guides. They’ll connect with you and get at the root of what’s going on with you, what’s holding you back and (the best part) what are your deepest dreams and desires? Then they’ll custom design the perfect retreat to bring you into the life (or the relationship) of your dreams. I’m not saying you won’t ever be afraid again, but now you’ll have the tools to move through the fear in every area of your life!

Is Egypt Safe?
One of the most common questions people ask me is “Is it safe to go to Egypt?” Here’s what I know:
- I have been going to Egypt since 1983.
- The Egyptian people are some of the nicest, friendliest, warmest people I have ever met and they love Americans.
- I have been taking groups to Egypt each year for 12 years (since 2004). I have taken 5 groups since the revolution (the last one in February, 2016) and these 5 trips have (in my opinion) been the best ones ever. There’s an excitement and a new feeling about the Egyptians that even having the beginnings of more freedom has brought to them.
- The U.S. has not issued any travel advisories for Egypt. I was just there in February (2016) and it was absolutely wonderful and we all felt completely safe at all times.
But don’t take it from me. Here is what some of the people from our last 2 trips had to say:
“The Return to Egypt February 2016 trip was most definitely my Journey of a Lifetime!!! I have never felt more safe, secure, or well taken care of in any of my travels as I did with SSA and Guardian Travel.”
“My visit to Egypt with Sedona Soul Adventures in Feb. 2016 was absolutely amazing! I felt safe, secure and taken care of by SSA and Guardian Travel. The Egyptian people were so friendly, warm and welcoming.”
