Is there anything worse? Is there anything more hurtful and horrible than finding out that your beloved has been cheating on you? That terrible feeling of having your guts ripped out when you discover the worst? It may be worse to find out that someone you love is dying, but I would say that the discovery of cheating is even more horrible than that. When someone is sick or dying it’s awful and terrible, but you don’t have the same sense of betrayal, the same sense of your entire world falling apart, you aren’t hurt to your core.
At the root is the betrayal and the dishonesty. This person that you thought you knew. This person that you trusted with your heart. This person that you trusted with your life. This person that you loved and who you believed loved you.
And then the questions start and you’re obsessively thinking the same things over and over again: how did this happen? When did it start? Could I have done something to prevent this? Has it happened before? And the worst part is, you can’t rely on answers from your partner, because you’ve realized in one fell swoop how dishonest they are. Dishonest to the core.
The dishonesty and the betrayal are the worst part. They’re telling you to your face “I love you”, but behind your back they’re betraying you and everything in your life. When we’re in a marriage or a relationship we want to believe we can trust this person with our hearts, with our lives, with our children, with our well being, with every aspect of our lives. Now, suddenly, all of that is called into question. How can I ever rely on this person again?
And with all the questions that won’t stop, you suddenly start to remember things. Times when you didn’t know where they were. Times when their answers to your questions didn’t add up, but you didn’t say anything for fear of rocking the boat. As Nora Ephron writes in her wonderful book “Heartburn”, it’s like a distant bell that’s ringing that you can’t quite hear, but you know it’s there.
Heartburn is a roman a’ clef based on Nora Ephron’s real life story of when she was married to Carl Bernstein, the Washington Post reporter who exposed the Watergate scandal (along with Bob Woodward) in All the President’s Men. While they were married (and while she was pregnant with their second child), he began an affair that would end up destroying their marriage. At the time, Nora Ephron was the Food Editor of the New York Post and the book combines her wrenching story along with recipes (!), including the recipe for the key lime pie she smashes into his face when she discovers all the lies and deceit. The book was made into a movie with Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson, directed by Mike Nichols. I just watched it again recently and it’s fantastic and, of course, heartbreaking. She went on to re-marry and wrote and directed such films as When Harry Met Sally, You’ve Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle. Her personal story has a happy ending, but not without a lot of heartache and pain from this betrayal.
Integrity is a word that nobody talks about much anymore and it feels like it’s something that no one values anymore. Our media is so full of casual sex, celebrities who are famous for doing nothing (Kim Kardashian, I’m talking to you) and the celebration of everything that is meaningless — money, fame, jet setting, svelte bodies and walking the red carpet. I believe that integrity is the cornerstone of everything that is meaningful in our lives. Integrity in our words and in our actions with everyone with whom we come into contact, but most especially in our close relationships.
In my own life, I’ve worked with couples for over 30 years, first as a divorce attorney and now with Sedona Soul Adventures. And sadly, so many couples come to us who are struggling with the issue of cheating. I have to believe that if people were shown a video of what’s going to happen, of the devastation that this will cause, how nothing will ever be the same again, that they would choose not to do it. That the excitement of the moment wouldn’t be enough to justify the emotional and spiritual havoc this will wreak. I like to think that, that thought makes me feel better, but I think I might be woefully naive about it.
Right after I got home from Egypt a few weeks ago, one of our amazing practitioners (Sequoia) contacted me by email and told me he wanted to add a new session. Sequoia told me that in all the work he’s been doing with men on our retreats he’s finding that most men simply don’t know how to be in integrity. They’ve never been taught. Sequoia is a very wise man and guys, I hate to single you out, but I’m afraid it’s true. Something has happened somewhere along the line and I don’t know exactly what’s caused it. And please understand, I’m not saying that women don’t cheat, they do, and we have lots of couples who come to us where that’s the situation. But what I’ve found is that once it comes out into the open, women understand that they have lied and been dishonest and they’re willing to deal with it. The problem we keep seeing is that there are so many men who don’t realize that what they’re doing is dishonest and out of integrity.
So Sequoia has now added a new session he’s calling “Stepping Into Integrity”, which involves hiking in the beautiful red rocks and talking and sharing. When I discussed this with our other practitioners who focus on couples work, their response was unanimous, because they’ve all seen this. As one of them (another man) wrote to me, “we need this process of talking and sharing and helping men release the guilt and shame and step into their truth so they can better sit with their partner’s anger, hurt and pain. To help men step back into integrity and heal from the self inflicted wounds that come from being dishonest.”
When you can talk about it, when you can let everything out into the open, you can heal. It’s difficult, it’s hard, but the healing can happen. We’ve seen it over and over again here in our retreats. There’s healing that has to happen for each person individually and then there’s the coming together and the start of re-building the trust and learning how to communicate with each other on a heart level. It’s sort of miraculous when two people can come back into a place of love and trust with each other after so much heartache and pain.
I must say, it still amazes me what can happen here. People who come on the brink of divorce and then turn it around. One couple who came last year and re-built their relationship are coming back again next week to celebrate and re-invigorate their healing and as they said, to “to take our love to a new level”. I can’t wait to see them again, it makes my heart happy.
If this issue has been haunting you, I first want to say I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry for your pain and hurt and anguish. But I also want to tell you that there’s hope. I know. I’ve seen it. I’ve seen the healing take place and people come out the other end. We’re all human. We all make mistakes, and sometimes the mistakes are more vicious and horrendous than we think we can bear. But you can bear it, you can make it through it.
And what if your partner won’t participate (which sometimes happens). Maybe it’s time for you to start the healing process on your own. We’ve actually had many times where one person does a retreat and it moves everything around and then both come back for a couples retreat.
Jim and Kate say “If you had told me that the connection between my partner and myself could be this deep and spiritual, I would have said it couldn’t be done.”
“Sedona Soul Adventures completely surpassed our expectations. If you had told me that the connection between my partner and myself could be this deep and spiritual, I would have said it couldn’t be done. The depth of our relationship now is far beyond anything we expected. We also have the skills to keep that bond, and keep working on our individual journeys. Sedona Soul Adventures has changed our lives, forever! Thank you from the bottom of our heart.”

At the beginning of the year we sent out a newsletter asking you what you most wanted for 2015? We had such an overwhelming response (thank you!) and it was so interesting to us because the answer for the vast majority of people was:
Peace
You know that feeling of aaaahhhhhhhhhhh…..
That knowing that all is well, that everything is okay, that everything is going to be okay, even if right now you’re standing in what looks like chaos.
How do you do that? The key is dropping the resistance to what is. Making a decision in the moment that you’re not going to judge what’s going on as “good” or “bad”, you’re simply going to go with the flow of what’s happening.
Think about it. It’s your judgment, your worrying, your constant carping about what’s wrong that is creating all the trouble for you in your life.
Think about all the time and energy you spend worrying about things. And very often it’s about things that never happen! Think about all the time and energy you spend regretting the past and wishing things were different. Think about how much more energy you would have to focus on your life if you channeled that energy into what you DO want.
Dropping the resistance, going with the flow, is the key to peace in your life, in your work, in your relationships, with your body, your money, every part of your life.
In my own life, it took me so long to figure this one out, much less implement. I read so many books, went to so many workshops and seminars trying to make myself “different” and “better”. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with wanting things to be different and better, but if you’re coming from the perspective of pushing against, you’re just going to make everything harder and harder.
It’s a paradox. The more we surrender, the more we stop working so hard at everything, the easier it gets. It goes against everything we were taught. Work hard, do, do, do and it will pay off. Has that worked for you? Don’t you find that the harder you work, the deeper you get into frustration and angst?
We have a War Against Drugs, a War Against Poverty, and isn’t almost everyone you know on a diet? What’s happened? More Americans are using drugs (legal and illegal) than ever before, there are more people below the poverty line now than 10 years ago and our obesity levels just keep climbing.
The key is resistance. Where are you coming from and what’s the energy you’re bringing? If you’re pushing against, you just bring more energy to what you don’t want.
In my own life, it was by dropping the resistance that the two most amazing things in my life have happened. I was able to leave my law practice and three years later start Sedona Soul Adventures, the work of my dreams. After struggling with body and weight issues for so many years, I finally gave up the struggle, dropped the resistance and started loving my body. Within 5 weeks I went down to a size 6 and have stayed there for 5 years, all the while eating and drinking whatever I want whenever I want it. When I started loving my body (instead of constantly wanting it to be different), I dropped the resistance and everything changed.
It’s simple, but as I well know, it’s not easy. It’s about finding the ways to drop how you’re resisting what is. Gratitude is a great one. Do you have money trouble? Start being grateful for what you DO have — a roof over your head and food to eat. Abundance is all about flow and money is all about energy. If you’re constantly focused on what you don’t have, it’s impossible (from an energy standpoint) for more to come in. Stuck in a “bad” relationship? As long as you keep calling it a “bad” relationship, you are the one who’s holding it there. Want to lose 20 pounds? Start appreciating your body for all the things it does for you — be grateful for your legs which take you everywhere, for your heart that keeps beating, your circulation that keeps everything moving, your eyes that can see. Stop resisting the parts you don’t like and start focusing on the parts you do like.
And here’s another big one – Stop Talking About It! Monitor your conversations (and those of others) for the next three days and I think you’ll be shocked and amazed and a little embarrassed. It’s so incredible to me how most people spend so much time talking about what’s wrong. Their spouse, their boyfriend/girlfriend, their job, their kids, their money situation, their weight, their commute, how technology drives them crazy, how long the line was at Starbucks! What we talk about we get more of — do you want more of the same?
Sometimes we just can’t stop it. Sometimes our minds get so full of these thoughts that we keep obsessing and we can’t make ourselves stop, even when we’re trying. That’s when you know you have to do something.
My favorite part of what we do here at Sedona Soul Adventures is how we help people find the peace they’re craving. Peace in their relationships, peace about their lives. How we help them come into the knowing on all levels – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual — that all is well.
Can you imagine living your life with peace at its core? That even when things are shattering around you, that you have the inner peace to handle everything — and I do mean EVERYTHING — with grace and ease? To be able to summon that feeling of aaahhhhhhhhhhh whenever you need to?
If you can imagine it, start living it. Come here and do a Soul Adventure – we’ll show you how it’s done. Contact us now to have a no cost, no obligation consultation with one of our Angel Guides. They’ll engage you (or both of you, if it’s a couple) in deep conversation to discover what YOU need and what YOU want. Then they’ll design the perfect retreat of one-on-one sessions with our amazing practitioners (we have over 40!)

Lin says her Soul Adventure brought here a peace that inspires her everyday
“How can I possibly condense my experience? From the first phone call to the last session, I was impressed with the level of professionalism, integrity and profound gifts each person embodied. Each session built on the previous one and I grew, learned, let go, healed, experienced wonders beyond my hopes and dreams and came away with a deeper understanding of myself, my spirituality, my direction in life and a peace that inspires me everyday. This was a Wow! experience for me…Thank you so much!”

Wishing you a week filled with peace,
Debra Stangl, Founder
Last week-end I saw the movie “Wild” with Reese Witherspoon playing Cheryl Strayed, who went on a journey of self discovery by hiking 1100 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail after the death of her mother. This is a true story and when her mother finds out she’s about to die of cancer at the age of 45, her mother says
“I was never me. I was never in the driver’s seat of my life. I thought I had so much time.”
In the past few months I’ve lost two people. One was the husband of a dear friend, who passed away very unexpectedly the day after Christmas. The other was someone I was very close to in law school. One was 58, the other was 60 and they both left children who are in their twenties. I’m sure they both thought they had another 20-30 years to be here.
My own mother died at 51 and I was only 26. In the year before her death, she was still talking about the places she wanted to travel to and about building her ‘dream house’. She never got to do either of those things.
Sixteen years ago, I was in the same boat. I hated my work and felt that I couldn’t leave, I was in an unhappy marriage, I suddenly had money problems and was 40 pounds overweight. I felt completely stuck. There were days I didn’t want to get out of bed. I remember having the thought at some point that I was the age my mother was when she had first gotten ill. I remember so vividly having the thought “if I died tomorrow I would be so pissed off.” I would have felt that I had never really lived my life. I was doing everything I thought I was supposed to do and it had left me feeling almost nothing but anguish and despair. I could have echoed those words: “I never felt like I was me. I never felt like I was in the driver’s seat of my life”.
Is there anything worse than feeling that we’re not living the lives we’re supposed to be living? The loss of a child or a spouse is more painful, but that’s something over which we have no control. We do, however, have control over how we live our lives. We can live with joy and hope, or we can live in despair and anguish, like I did for so many years.
I thank God every day that 16 years ago I came to Sedona. It saved me. It saved my life. It made me finally take responsibility for my life and my happiness. I saw that I couldn’t blame anyone else for anything that had happened to me. I was creating all of it and I was creating it for a reason. I didn’t know what the reason was at that time, but I knew I could choose happiness over despair. Joy over anguish.
If you absolutely know that you were going to die in 6 months, would you be saying the words –
“I was never me.
I was never in the driver’s seat of my life.
I thought I had so much time.”?
Would you feel like your life has been well lived? Have you done what you set out to do?
Are you settling? Are you putting up with a mediocre job, a mediocre relationship, a mediocre body, a mediocre existence? That is NOT what you came here to do.
My three days in Sedona back in 1999 changed everything. I went home, and started making changes. It wasn’t easy, but as I look back I can see the Divine intervention that came in the minute I decided that I was going to be me and I was going to get myself in the driver’s seat of my life.
And I’ll never forget the day, 2 years later, when I sat in my kitchen watching trees blow in the wind and suddenly feeling this overwhelming sense of peace. And having the thought, “oh my God, if I died tomorrow it would be okay”. I finally had found the peace that I was seeking. Amazingly, nothing had happened that day, I was alone and feeling the grace that happens when the peace that is always there for us is finally allowed to descend upon us.
One year later I moved to Sedona and started Sedona Soul Adventures so that other people could have the same experience.
If you aren’t living your best life it’s time to start doing it. There’s no excuse not to. Please don’t send me a reply email and tell me you don’t have enough money — I was $50,000 in debt when I came to Sedona for the first time; don’t tell me you don’t have enough time — I was working 60-70 hours per week in my law practice, and don’t tell me you’re afraid it won’t work (we’ve been doing this for 13 years and it’s “worked” for thousands and thousands of people).
If you’re still reading this, you’re at a crossroads in your life. You know you have to do something. Are you going to do it? It’s your choice. You can choose mediocrity, or you can choose joy and hope and knowing that you have lived your life to its fullest. Or not. Your choice.
Diane says her soul adventure filled her with peace, love and joy!
“I never imagined after such a process I would be feeling so much lighter… clearer… and overflowing with so much peace… joy… love and light! What an amazing experience to say the least. I wish to extend to everyone at Sedona Soul Adventures and all the Practitioners who were all absolutely awesome that I worked with my deep love and warm-hearted gratitude! I will be back! Namaste’Namaste;’Namaste’”

I’m coming to you today to talk about the idea of how when one door closes, another opens. In my own life, I’ve just had the most amazing experience of that. It’s so fascinating to me how in an instant our lives can be transformed. I’ve had that experience twice now in the past 6 months. I was in the middle of a situation where I thought I had lost an opportunity I was telling myself was something I wanted very badly. In the letting go, something else showed up, almost instantaneously. Something that looks like it will be an even more wonderful and delicious opportunity than the first one could ever have been. And the second opportunity could never have shown up if I hadn’t let go of the first one.
Alexander Graham Bell said:
“When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.”
Oh gosh! How many times have we done that (myself included)? I’m here to tell you that living a life with any regrets is so counter productive and so not worth the time and energy. Regretting that we didn’t have “good” parents, that we “should” have done something differently, that we didn’t go to the “right” school, that we married the “wrong” person, constantly lamenting “if only…” Think of the energy you could use on manifesting something wonderful (and probably even better) if you weren’t wasting the energy on your regrets.
Regret is just another form of not being present in our lives. The truth is, everything that happens is supposed to happen and we are the ones creating it and bringing it into our lives. Everything is coming to us for the spiritual insights it carries and fulfilling soul contracts and agreements that are in our highest good. That’s either true all the time or it’s never true. It may be difficult for us to see that when we’re in the middle of something, but in my own life, just having that awareness has pulled me through many a stormy sea. And it did it again this time and carried me safely to the shore. We are so protected and so taken care of, but often we just can’t see that.
It’s so interesting to me that when we’re open to it, the Universe will send us some pretty amazing stuff. When we look back, we can see the synchronicity and perfection in all of it. A chance meeting, a (seemingly) casual conversation, being in the right place at the right time. For me, that seems to happen a lot on plane rides, which is wonderful since I travel so much and take so many plane rides! And the really funny thing is, I wasn’t supposed to be on this last plane ride, it got switched around at the last minute. A coincidence? I don’t think so.
So if you have any regrets in your life, I would invite you to man up and put your big girl panties on and stop whining. I hope that doesn’t sound too brutal, especially if you are in the middle of some painful experience. If you can look at what you’re telling yourself and what you’re afraid of, many times you’ll find that what you’re telling yourself simply isn’t true and the thing you’re most afraid of isn’t even going to happen. If something is happening that is difficult and painful, start to look for the glimmers of the gold that is there for you. It may be difficult, but I promise you it’s there.
In my own life, the worst thing that has ever happened to me was the death of my mother when I was only 26 (and she was only 51). Her birthday was this past week (March 3), so she’s really been on my mind and I’ve really felt her presence. Even after all these years, I still miss talking to her and being with her; she was the kindest person I’ve ever known. When she died, if someone had said to me that this was a gift, I would have smacked them. But looking back, there have been huge gifts that have come from that. It started me on my spiritual path in a very direct way, my very German family finally started saying “I love you” to each other, and it opened the door to me having a really wonderful relationship with my father. It took me many years to see the gifts in her passing, but they are most assuredly there. I see now that it was one of the most important turning points of my life.
I found another quote about this that I love:
“Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together”.
I know that this is true and the past 6 months have proven it to me again. So I say, “Universe, bring it on!”
If you don’t feel that way, if you’re finding that regret is a part of your life, I want to invite you to come to Sedona and do something about it. You CAN do something about it. Regret and the other (so called) negative emotions (fear, anxiety, angst, feeling like your life is out of control) are just indicators of disconnection and energetic blocks. Those blocks can be broken up and removed and you can come back into connection on all the levels — physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. And when you do that, your life starts feeling really good.
What we do here at Sedona Soul Adventures is exactly that — we identify the energetic blocks and gunk that are holding you back, remove them and move you back into connection. This month marks the beginning of our 13th year of doing this work and the transformations that happen here as a result still stun and amaze me, even after all these years and the thousands of people who have come here to do this work.
How do we do it? We spend a lot of time talking with you before you come (or both of you if it’s a couple) and really identify what’s going on with you and what is needed. We then custom design your retreat where you’ll be working one-on-one (not in a group) with our master practitioners (we have over 40!) who are the most experienced and amazing practitioners in Sedona. When you combine our custom approach, the incredible practitioners and the transformational energy of Sedona, the results are almost unbelievable.

Most of all, it taught me how to integrate these teachings into my daily life and that I can keep myself in alignment in LIFE, no matter the level of stress in the high-paced world of finance and intensity of New York, or regardless of what life throws at me and the “external” circumstances…personal, relationships, or professional….it taught me that I HAVE IT ALL…ALL INSIDE ME….and that is the most POWERFUL thing and highest vibration in the Universe – tapping into your HEART AND SOUL!!!! Thank You Sedona Soul Adventures – All of YOU, THANK YOU!!!”

Greetings from Egypt! Oh my Goddess, everything on our trip this year has been so wonderful! The Great Pyramid, the Sphinx, the Nile Cruise, the people, the hotels, the food — everything has been spectacular.
On the day we arrived I was actually feeling a little discombobulated — the accumulation of “stuff” going on at home. But within 24 hours, everything shifted. The energy here is so strong that it brings you back into all the quiet strength you have inside. Mother Egypt wrapped her arms around me again and I quickly realized how meaningless the “stuff” is that we think is so important in our small lives. Nothing is more important than our connection to Source and you just experience that here big time. It’s almost as if you can’t help but experience that as you are surrounded by the enormity of this civilization and its dedication to all things sacred.
At the very beginning of the trip we rode camels to the Great Pyramid – (here’s a picture of our group – see the Pyramid in the background?) and this overwhelming sense of the deep connection to the Divine was truly anchored in. Along with a deep sense of peace and just pure fun.
The Steppe Pyramid is believed to be the first Pyramid ever built and the acoustics at this place are almost unbelievable. It’s in the beautiful and lush town of Saqqara. Here’s me in front of the Steppe Pyramid. I love the look on the camel’s face and I love the two guys just sitting on the sand with their donkey.
Next, onto the Sphinx – here’s Amy and Shelly hangin’ out with the Sphinx
We spent almost an entire day at the Cairo Museum seeing the treasures of King Tut (and so much more!). The gold, the jewelry, the opulence still amazes. His death mask made of gold and lapis lazuli is one of the most spectacular in the exhibit, which covers an entire floor.
One of the most interesting places we go to is the Serrapeum. The Egyptians worshipped the Apis bull and because they were considered sacred, the bulls were mummified. The Serrapeum is a huge underground complex about 20 minutes from Cairo where the bulls are buried in enormous sarcophagi made of granite. You can see how huge the sarcophagus is, as we’re all standing under the lid! We were so lucky, there was no one else there, and we were able to do the most incredible ceremony in that special place.
Here’s the obelisk of Hatsepshut at the fabulous Temple of Karnak. Karnak was built over a period of 2200 years (!) and the sheer magnitude of the place is overwhelming, and so beautiful.
It’s considered good luck to walk three times around the scarab at Karnak, so of course we all did that.
And what a fabulous ceremony we were able to do in Karnak. I was vibrating for hours afterward and over dinner people shared some incredible stories of what they experienced during that ceremony.
And here is beautiful Luxor Temple. We always go at night because it’s lit and so spectacularly beautiful. And Luxor Temple is always orb central. Look at this beautiful picture that our group member Jim took last night (thanks, Jim!). Can you see the orbs in this picture?
What are orbs? Many different people have many different explanations — beings from other dimensions, spirits of people who have crossed over, inter-dimensional conscious energy. I can tell you after taking photographs for over 20 years at sacred sites around the world, when they look like this, they are not a light problem with a camera.
Today, we went to The Temple of Abydos. What an amazing, incredible place. I believe (and so does our wonderful guide, Raafat) that this is the most beautiful temple in all of Egypt. And I would add that it has the most amazing energy. Look at this fabulous carving of Isis giving the ankh (the key of life) to the Pharaoh. Look at those beautiful colors which have survived for these thousands of years. You can almost feel the loving support he’s receiving from the goddess. We did a very powerful ceremony here.
Abydos is also where you find the carvings of a helicopter, a tank and a plane. See them in the picture? How is it possible? What are these? We had a long discussion about all the possibilities, as you can imagine. That’s one of the most fun parts for me about going to Egypt — discussing all the possibilities of how all this came to be.
And again we did the most fantastic ceremony in Aybdos. The veils are thinner here in Egypt, so even people who haven’t done much of this before are kind of amazed at what’s happening to them here.
Tomorrow we start our 5 day Nile cruise, then onto Abu Simbel and on our final day we have 2 hours of private time just for our group inside the Great Pyramid. That ceremony is so other-worldly — I can’t wait.
This is my 14th time going to Egypt and my friends are always saying to me “aren’t you over Egypt yet?” and the answer is an emphatic no! The energy of this sacred place just gets me every time. And it’s new every time.
And to answer the thought you might be having, we have all felt so completely safe. The Egyptian people are so warm and friendly. Everywhere we have gone, we have been warmly welcomed. And, of course, they’re happy to see Americans who are interested in shopping (and the shopping has been phenomenal!) I watch CNN occasionally while I’m here and I find it incredibly ironic that while I’ve been here there has been a terrorist alert for the Mall of America and there are no terror alerts for Egypt!
By the time you read this, I’ll be on the plane back from this magical journey. I’m so blissed out already, I can’t imagine how I’ll be by the very end.
And you might want to start thinking about coming to Egypt with me next year. We always do the trip the last two weeks of February because the weather is so perfect during that time. It’s safe, it’s beautiful, it’s incredible — if you feel a pull to Mother Egypt (you know who you are), I invite you to come with me next year. Send me an email at [email protected] and I’ll make sure you get all the details when we announce the trip.
Wishing you a week filled with adventure,
