My new book – Dancing In The Unknown – Buy it tomorrow (Monday)

I am so excited to be a part of a new collaboration of story tellers sharing their amazing journeys into the unknown! Our book Dancing In The Unknown is coming out tomorrow! Please help us become a best-seller and inspire people to let go and dance!
Please buy the book tomorrow (not today!). We are trying to make it an Amazon #1 Best Seller and that depends on a whole bunch of people buying it on one day (Monday, September 25).
I feel so honored to have been asked to be part of this. The moving force behind it is Betsy Chasse, who was one of the Co-Creators (Writer, Director, Producer) of What The Bleep Do We Know?. Do you remember that movie, have you ever seen it? It came out in 2004 and it is a documentary that starred Marlee Matlin and introduced the world to such New Thought people as Dr. Joe Dispenza. That movie had a huge impact on my life, especially in how I viewed the world from a spiritual perspective.
So imagine how shocked and happy I was when Betsy asked me to contribute to this book and write one of the chapters. Dancing In The Unknown shares the stories of 16 everyday people who have survived and thrived through the trials and triumphs of living the life they desire.
My chapter, is entitled:

My Sedona Soul Adventure
— How A Burned Out Divorce Lawyer Found Love, Happiness and Purpose
By Learning How to Surrender

I tell the story of how I left my law practice of 20 years, stepped into the Unknown and ultimately founded Sedona Soul Adventures.
I love how Betsy describes it:
“Every day I encounter people who are tired, broke, broken-hearted, rich and still depressed because they aren’t happy, they aren’t living their lives their way, or anywhere near the life of their dreams. I felt it was time to hear from everyday people about how they took a leap of faith and began dancing to their own tune.”
You can get the book on Amazon: http://bit.ly/DancingUnknown
(Remember, buy it tomorrow (Monday) not today to help us hit Amazon #1. I’ll send you a reminder email tomorrow.
It was really wonderful to write this chapter and, as always, it really brought back lots of memories. The thing that still stuns me is that I allowed myself to stay so unhappy for so long. But that’s what we do, don’t we? We think that there’s nothing we can do about the hand which life has dealt us, that we have to stay stuck.
Well, I’m here to tell you that’s not the case, and that’s the story that each and every person in the book is talking about. Your life can be different, you just have to make the decision to make it different and then do something about it. That’s why I started Sedona Soul Adventures – so that people can do what it takes to have the life or the relationship of their dreams, because I know from my own experience that it’s possible.
If you’re feeling stuck, if you’re feeling like you’re not living the life you want, please connect with us. Talk with one of our Retreat Guides — they’ll dig deep to get at the heart of what’s holding you back and then they’ll custom design a retreat that will take you from where you are to where you need to be.

Or if you’d prefer, call us toll-free at 1-877-204-3664 (US and Canada). For our friends outside the US and Canada call 01 928-204-5988 or click here and one of our Retreat Guides will call you.
Would you like to speak to someone today? We’re even open on Sundays, because we’re here for you.
Wishing you a week filled with Dancing In The Unknown,

Layce says she went from a “dark, hopeless existence to a joyful, abundant and grateful life” thanks to her Soul Adventure

“Prior to my Soul Adventure, I had been struggling with depression, weight gain, addiction, smoking and anxiety for months. I had tried medication and therapy and neither of those worked, in fact the medications only made things worse; more weight gain, less energy and sluggish thoughts.
During the adventure, I could already feel blockages opening up and hope coming back into my mind. I was in such a sad and lonely place prior that I immediately felt changes occurring. It was so exciting learning new techniques and tools to help manage my moods.
After completion of the adventure, I went home and immediately put my new techniques into practice. Within a month, I effortlessly lost 9 pounds and started working out again as soon as we arrived back home. I have taken a proactive approach towards my attitude, protecting it from negativity and situations that provoke anger and irritability. I live in the moment now and am able to see immediately when my emotions are turning and take responsibility for my well-being by using the tools I received during my retreat.
I had no idea that in less than a month my life would go from a dark, hopeless existence to a joyful, abundant and grateful life. Thank you Soul Adventures!”

Take a leap and come with me to Egypt – Feb. 11-25

Travel is one of the ways we can really make our lives be different. Doing the same thing over and over again, staying in the same place all the time is a recipe for unhappiness and frustration. If you want to really start living your life in a different way, think about coming to Egypt with me in February.
People are so amazed when I tell them I’ve been to Egypt 17 times and I’ve traveled (and taken groups to) Bali and Peru. Especially when I was younger and didn’t have a whole lot of money, people would say, ‘how do you do it?’ And the answer was, I made a choice. One of the decisions I made in my twenties was that I was going to travel. Even when I didn’t have much money, I arranged things so that I could go on trips.
I came to that decision because 2 things happened. My sister was living in Jordan and she invited me for a visit. I went to see her and then went to Egypt (which was a 20 minute plane ride) because I had always wanted to go there. While I was there I saw all these groups of tourists consisting primarily of retired people (because they have the time to take a 2 week trip). The problem was that there was a whole lot of stuff they couldn’t do, like walk bent over in the Pyramid, and most of them didn’t want to ride a camel. I remember having the thought, “I’m not going to wait to travel until I’m too old to enjoy it”.
At about the same time, my grandmother retired from her very demanding job as the Head Nurse at a hospital. She and my grandfather scrimped and saved their entire lives and she was always saying that when she retired they were going to start traveling. She retired at age 65 and they went on one trip, a car trip to visit relatives in Michigan (my mother and sister and I went with them).
We did a whole bunch of fun things (road a boat across Lake Michigan, went to museums, I loved visiting with my cousins), but my grandparents hated it. They hated all the food, all the places we stayed and thought everything was too expensive. They never went anywhere again. Traveling was just too far out of their comfort zone and out of their everyday work-hard life to even be something they could enjoy. When I saw that, I vowed that wasn’t going to happen to me.
Looking back, I’m so glad I made that decision. It has added so much to my life, not just the fun factor but in really appreciating other people and other cultures and in enhancing my spiritual life. Some of the most expansive spiritual experiences I’ve ever had have been on these trips.
So I invite you, take the leap. Do something very different. Come to Egypt with me. You won’t be sorry.
“I have never had a trip that was such a complete experience; mind, body, heart and soul. I really felt myself open to the deep quiet of Egypt and somehow, it changed my life”

You can’t pour from an empty cup; the vicious cycle of not taking care of yourself

It’s so interesting to us, because we seem to have waves of people with the same kind of problems contacting us at the same time for doing a retreat. We’ll have a few weeks of getting nothing but couples who have suffered infidelity and then we’ll have a few weeks of people who have deep issues with not loving themselves, it’s so fascinating how it seems to happen in waves.
Right now the issue that seems to be coming up the most is people who do, do, do for everyone else and can’t give themselves permission to do things to take care of themselves. They contact us about doing a retreat, they know they need to do something to change their pattern and then when it gets down to making the decision, they just simply cannot give themselves permission to spend the time, spend the money, but what it really comes down to, they can’t give themselves permission to do something for themselves.
And it’s really frightening to me, because some of these people are actually — quite literally — killing themselves. They are overworked, overwhelmed and at the end of their rope. And even though they know that they’re killing themselves, they can’t let go of the pattern. I recognize the pattern because that’s what I was doing to myself 18 years ago before I came to Sedona.
We had one person who contacted us for the first time over 5 years ago and decided to not do the retreat. Last week she called and said “I finally have to do something”. She’s now much, much worse than she was 5 years ago, her health is suffering, her husband has left her (even after all her care taking) and she’s so completely burned out at work that she could barely function.
This is the vicious cycle I’m talking about that happens when we don’t take care of ourselves. Things just get worse. We think we’re helping the people around us, but we’re not. We have the thought, “I need to do something to change this” and we might even look into doing something, but then we won’t give ourselves permission to do it, telling ourselves we have to take care of everyone else. But all that happens is that the problems just get deeper, the resentments get deeper and then the stress starts showing up in health problems, marital strife and just feeling awful most of the time. It just keeps going around and around.
Luckily, her Soul Adventure got at the underlying issues that were causing all this (especially around her belief that she has to do things for people in order for them to love her, which was all tangled up in her trying to please her father) and she really came back into connection. I swear she looked twenty years younger when she came into the office at the end of her retreat to say goodbye and thank us. But the best part is that she feels in a completely different space than when she came, she knows that a fundamental shift and change has happened, she knows her life has changed and is going to continue to change.
And that’s the key — to do something about this, you actually have to do something to make a change. Something like a vacation doesn’t do it. I used to take vacations to try to relieve my stress and unhappiness and I would have a week of feeling a little better, but then I would come back to the same old stuff and the same old me.
It always reminds me of what they tell you when you fly. If the cabin pressure drops, put on your air mask and if you’re traveling with a child or an infirm person, put your air mask on first and THEN help them put on their mask. The reasoning is very simple. The sooner you take care of yourself, the more you’re increasing your chances that you’re going to be able to help the other person. In the time it takes to try to put the mask on the child (who may be kicking and screaming), air pressure in the cabin can drop so low that you’re not in a position to be able to help anyone, let alone your child. Taking care of yourself first means you’re better able to take care of others.
So I was thinking about all this and of course I was on Pinterest (looking at flower ideas for my wedding) when I saw this (why in the world would this be on a page about wedding flowers? I call it God winking at me — telling me I’m on the right track thinking and writing about this):

Are you feeling empty?
Are you running on fumes?
Do you know that you need to be doing something to take care of yourself, but you keep putting it off?
Stop! You aren’t doing anyone any favors (least of all yourself) by not doing something to take care of yourself.
Please contact us. I promise you there is something underneath this issue, something that goes deeper than not just taking care of yourself. Speak with one of our Guides and they’ll get to the root of the issue that’s holding you back from living a life of joy and ease.

Or if you’d prefer, call us toll-free at 1-877-204-3664 (US and Canada). For our friends outside the US and Canada call 01 928-204-5988 or click here and one of our Guides will call you.

Kris says that after learning “the importance of taking care of me”, “I am truly happy for the first time in more than 40 years”

“I was truly blessed to have this soul adventure, and now that I am back at home the benefits of my experience have become obvious to all of those around me. I am truly happy for the first time in more than 40 years of living life! I had always been there to make sure everyone else was happy, and now I have learned that I can be there for others without denying myself. I love myself! I have learned the importance of taking care of me! I am now touching the lives of others in a most positive way. Friends and family both, have expressed a deep interest in my experiences. I feel loved!”

Could this be the year you give yourself the gift of going to Egypt? Join us February 11-25

Someone called me this past week and wants to go on the Egypt trip. We had a beautiful conversation. She’s had a lot of loss in her life and this trip is such a stretch for her. She’s never done any traveling, she doesn’t have a passport, so she was concerned about being able to do this trip. It was so much fun talking to her and telling her about how everything is just completely taken care of for us on this trip. She’ll need to get a passport and fly to JFK, but we even found a flight that’s absolutely perfect for her. And after that, it’s smooth sailing. Literally. Every day is planned to perfection (including our 5 day cruise down the Nile on our 5 star ship), with seeing amazing sites, connecting in with the energy, connecting with our fellow travelers and having fun. I’ve done this trip 18 times now(!) and I must tell you, it’s perfect. It’s so beautiful and enriching.
Could this be the year you give yourself the gift of going to Egypt? Because that’s what it is, a precious gift. I’d love to have you join us.

My week sucked until this happened

I don’t know about you, but this week has pretty much sucked.
Hurricane Harvey (can you imagine digging out from under that?), Hurricane Irma, the earthquake in Mexico, I had a fight with my fiancé, I’ve got too much to do before my wedding (even though we’re keeping it very simple), my sister doesn’t like the bridesmaid dress I picked out (I know, that’s so minor, but it affects me) and it all just piled up to be a sucky week.
I hate that. I spend my life telling people how to not have that happen, how to move through that, how to not be that way.
And then today, someone said something to me that totally changed everything around.
A new client came into Sedona Soul Adventures. I rushed over to the office to greet her. I don’t work at the office anymore, as it’s so busy there I can’t get anything done when I’m there. I work from home, which is literally an 8 minute drive from the office. I do my best to go to meet each client to greet them and at least to hug them and to say hello, because I know what a big deal it is to do a retreat like this.
I rushed to the office and walked in and hugged this woman and asked her how she was feeling and she started telling me that she had wanted to come on a Soul Adventure for over 5 years. She’s been reading my newsletter every week for the past 6 years and always wanted to come but felt like she couldn’t afford it, she couldn’t take the time and her life wasn’t “messed up enough” to warrant doing a Soul Adventure.
She told me that 2 years ago I had written a newsletter that had changed everything for her. It was about how scientists found that simply by standing in a power pose for two minutes increases testosterone and makes people feel more powerful. In the newsletter, I invited people to do that every day for 2 minutes and see if it made a difference.
She told me that it changed her life. She had always been a very mousy, subdued person that people tended to walk all over. She was in an emotionally abusive relationship, but wasn’t calling it that and wasn’t admitting it to herself.
She said that just standing in that position started to make her change.
And then a few months ago, these new feelings of confidence made her decide she wanted to have her life be different. Her new confidence made her feel like this was actually possible. When that light went on, her first though was “I’m going to do a Soul Adventure”.
So she’s in the middle of it now, and when I spoke with her after her second day, she said she can’t believe how her confidence and sense of inner power have increased ten-fold. She said she can’t imagine how she’s going to feel at the end of it.
Needless to say, that completely turned my week around! I haven’t been doing the power pose and just doing it one time today, made me feel great! So, I’m re-creating that newsletter from 2 years ago so that you have it. Here it is:
If you could feel more confident and powerful in 2 minutes would you be willing to do it every day? Believe me when I tell you, it’s worth it.
If you’ve been reading my newsletter this past year, you know I’ve been talking a lot about how our brains affect everything in our lives. But today I want to talk about how doing something with your body can affect everything.
Researchers at Harvard have discovered that not only does your body language effect how other people perceive you, but your body language has an affect on how you perceive yourself and how you feel. What they discovered is that people who stand or sit in a power pose for more than two minutes have increased levels of testosterone and decreased levels of cortisol.
These hormones can change within seconds and have a dramatic impact on how you’re feeling. Testosterone makes people feel more confident, more self empowered. Reducing cortisol results in lower levels of stress and anxiety. Cortisol is also known to lower immune function and bone density, interfere with learning and memory, increase weight gain, create negative impact on blood pressure, cholesterol and heart disease, so anything you can do to lower cortisol is a very good thing.
The power poses that they studied were what we usually call the Superman or Superwoman pose, with your hands on your hips, feet at least shoulder-width apart, chest out, head held high. They also included sitting back with your feet on a table, and the decidedly less-ladylike sitting with your legs spread wide apart (guys, you can get away with this one). What they found was that in 2 minutes, the hormonal levels changed dramatically.
Not only did the testosterone and cortisol levels change, but the people reported feeling much more confident and powerful. And I don’t mean the kind of power where you’re barking orders at everyone and they’re shaking in their  boots. That’s not power, that’s intimidation. I’m talking about the feeling that comes from truly being in your own power. Self empowerment.
Try doing this every day. Stand in that power pose and breathe deeply. Do it for 2 minutes each morning. Or do it for 2 minutes before an important meeting (I just did it last week in a bathroom stall!) Visualize powerful energy coursing through you and coming out of you. If you’re doing it before a meeting or an important event, visualize how you want the meeting or event to go.
Okay, so now I’ll be very vulnerable and share my secret with you about how I do this. I do the pose, but I don’t envision myself in a Superwoman costume. Instead I envision myself (don’t laugh) in full Egyptian regalia. I do this because I know I had a past life where I was a priestess in the Temple of Karnak and I had some very strange powers. I wasn’t anyone famous (I’ve never been anyone famous), but I was very powerful. One of the things I could do was blast energy through my hands and knock people over. Literally, I could knock them over. In that lifetime I abused those powers and one of the lessons for me in this lifetime has been around the abuse of power (a lesson that received a lot of healing when I was an attorney).
So I do the pose and see myself dressed as an Egyptian woman in the dresses you see depicted in the temples and tombs, I have gold bands around my wrists and upper arms and a beautiful headdress. I envision the power energy running throughout my body and then coming out of my heart. The power energy is mixed with the heart energy in a beautiful combination of power and love. The energy is never used to blast anyone (or knock them over!), it’s used for my own self empowerment and for the other person to feel that and my love. It’s a very juicy combination!
Self empowerment is so critical to a meaningful and happy life. Do you feel self empowered? Do you know that you have the inner strength to face anything that life throws at you or to create the life of your dreams? Standing in a power pose might not be enough.
If that’s the case, I urge you to contact us and do something about it. Empowering yourself, living your best life is your birthright and helping you find that is what we do best.

4 tips for slowing down that can work magic in your life [and bring you peace and calm]

This week I was on the phone with one of my coaching clients (I love her so much, she’s done 2 Soul Adventures, been to Peru with me, I’ve coached with her for years and her life has become about 99% perfect, she’s a joy to work with) and we started talking about the other 1% of her life that in this moment is not exactly perfect. This thing has been bugging her for awhile and during our call, we really got at the heart of this particular pattern and (in her usual way) she blasted right through it.
We kept talking about how to prevent this from coming up again in the first place and I started talking to her (as I do with all my coaching clients) about the magic and the power of Slowing Down.
Doesn’t it feel like things in our modern day life have just gotten absolutely crazy? I love technology (I love that I can easily send these emails to you and I love it when my iPhone says “ding ding” and it’s a sweet text from my honey), but hasn’t all this stuff just made things a little nuts? And I especially hate watching couples (or worse, entire families) sit in restaurants not talking to each other, and everyone is on their phones. I can understand doing that for 5 minutes to check for something that feels important, but to do it for the entire time until the food comes and sometimes even while they’re eating?
When I was in 6th grade, we got the Weekly Reader (printed, not in email), and I remember an article that said that at the turn of the century (the year 2000 – which at that point was 35 years away), the biggest problem we would all have would be what to do with all of our free time. Their point was that many people were starting to get so many labor saving devices (dishwashers, automatic washing machines, motorized lawn mowers) and most people had gone to a 5-day work week, that, according to the article, by the year 2000 our biggest problem would be what to do with all the free time we have.
WRONG! Could they have been anymore wrong? Technology has just amped everything up to a fever pitch. I’m so glad I left my divorce lawyer practice in 1999, just when the internet and emails were coming in and just when everyone’s attitude started to be, “I should be able to get you whenever I want you”.
Do you find yourself rushing around a lot? Do you find yourself feeling overwhelmed a lot? For the first time in a long time, I spent much of today in overwhelm and I’m not used to doing that and, I’ll tell you, I don’t like it, it doesn’t feel good.
When I brought this up with my client, she started talking about how rushing around all the time just fans the flame of the anxiety that she sometimes feels. I think that’s true for everyone, it’s certainly true for me. As I’m rushing around I can feel my heart rate going up, I can sometimes feel my stomach churning and and my mind is scattered. Is that true for you?
Doctors and scientists have now proven that this type of stress (especially this type which can be almost constant) is very bad for our bodies, resulting in higher levels of cortisol, higher blood pressure and erratic heart rates.
I also find that when I’m rushing around, I make stupid mistakes that end up costing me even more time. Have you ever rushed around looking for your sunglasses and they’re on top of your head? Have you ever rushed around looking for your keys and you’re holding them? Research has found that multi-tasking not only doesn’t work, it’s worse for everything. Everything gets done by as much as a 20% less effective rate than if the person is focusing on doing one thing at a time.
There are some really simple things that you can do that can bring some peace and calm to your life right away, by simply Slowing Down. The key is that it’s simple, but it’s not easy. Most of us are so wired to go, go, go, that slowing down can be difficult. But I promise you, these work:

1. Sit and take a deep breath and close your eyes. Set the intention, “I am starting to slow down. I am being more careful and conscious.” Take some more deep breaths as you do this and actually see yourself in your mind’s eye moving through life at a slower pace.

2. Make the decision to leave 10 minutes earlier than you think you need to leave for everything that is on your schedule — appointments, meetings, being at the gate for a plane, etc. This telegraphs your brain “I’m early, I have plenty of time”, so the rushing element is completely eliminated. I promise you, this is not a waste of time, you will be amazed if you do this for even 3 days.

3. Every time you sit down in a chair or get up from a chair, do it more slowly than you normally would. Don’t plop down or jump up. Sit down very slowly and consciously and you might even say to yourself, “I’m sitting down slowly”. As you get back up, do it slowly and, again, you might say to yourself, “I’m getting up slowly and consciously”.

4. Set the intention that you are going to walk more slowly (unless there is a situation where you’re running for a plane, but again, if you left 10 minutes earlier than necessary you wouldn’t find yourself running for a plane). When you feel yourself speeding up, simply start walking more slowly. As you see other people passing you and rushing around, smile and send them love and be grateful for this newfound peace that has come into your life.

Do this for 3 days. Just tell yourself you’re going to do it for 3 days, because promising to do it forever is too overwhelming for your brain. Do it for 3 days and I promise you will feel differently, and you’ll have a deep desire to do it for longer. It’s so different and so counter to how almost everyone else does things, I think you will be amazed. And I think you will be doubly amazed at the peace this brings you.
If you find this to be difficult, or if you find that just doing this for 3 days doesn’t create a significant sense of peace, then that could mean that there are much deeper issues here. So many of us are so used to living with anxiety all the time, that it becomes second nature. There might be deeper clearing that needs to happen to really bring you into a sense of peace and contentment, not only with your life, but also with your relationship. Or maybe your partner is so out of balance, that you changing one thing doesn’t have that much of an impact. In that case, you need something deeper and more encompassing, like a Soul Adventure. That’s what we do best — clearing the blocks and the gunk that are holding you back. And then bringing you into connection on all the levels — physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.
Connect with us. Speak with one of our Guides — they’ll dig deep to get at the bottom of what’s going on and design a retreat that is perfect to take you from where you are to where you want to be.

Linda says last year’s trip to Egypt was “phenomenal”, “unforgettable” and she felt completely safe

“Before I start my testimonial I want to thank Debra for everything she did to make our trip special for all of us not only as a group but as individuals as well. Debra, Thank You!!!! I will honestly say that I did not think I would enjoy a “group” trip as much as I did. I have never done traveling as a group before and for me to pick such a place not only as being so far from the states but to Ancient Egypt. When my friends started questioning me why did I want to go to Egypt and people telling me I was dumb and stupid for wanting to go. Let me just say, I have never felt more safe, secure, or well taken care of in any of my travels as I did with this group of gentlemen from Guardian Travel (Mohammed, Raafat & Abdullah). From the minute we landed at Cairo and were greeted by Abdullah, to the bus where we met Mohammed one could not ask for anything better. As our journey began the next morning we met our guide Raafat who was our teacher, educator, mentor, protector, but most of all our new friend. He brought us to places that were spectacular and magical and knew everything about them. He went above and beyond what any group guide would do; he helped us with our dickering  for our prices, he told us what was good vs what was not good. He truly was enthusiastic and passionate about his heritage. I felt as if I had known him prior to us even getting there and meeting him. Mohammed, was awesome. He put together a spectacular 2 week trip that included everything and anything that one could see in that time span without getting “burnt out”. He was right on with all of the arrangements to the different hotels, the flights, the cruise down the Nile, the Felucca ride. Everything went smoothly and as planned. And last but not least Abdullah. He was the man who hung behind w/ me when I was walking slowly. He was the man who got us our belongings we left on the bus (even after the bus dropped us off and left to park), and he was the man who led us through customs, and security and handled all of our bags from the minute we got to Cairo to the minute he and Mohammed left us at the gate when we departed.
The whole trip was truly phenomenal! Debra did a great job in doing just the right amount of stuff every day. There are so many highlights for me from the camel ride, to the Felucca sailing, to the Queens chamber in the Great Pyramid to my favorite hot air balloon ride and floating over the Nile at sunrise. My memories are truly unforgettable. But most of all The Return to Egypt February 2016 was most definitely my Journey of a Lifetime!!!”
