I think a picture really is worth 1000 words. I was going through pictures of this years’ Peru and Machu Picchu trip, and the pictures definitely say it all. Look at the happiness on Selena’s face on our first day at Machu Picchu. This is such a dream come true for so many people. You can just hear her saying “Yes!”

And I love this picture of Jorge and I at Machu Picchu. What a joy to be there and to be in his presence for 2 weeks.

Jorge Luis Delgado is our shaman and guide during this amazing journey. You might know him from the History Channel’s Ancient Aliens; he’s in 9 episodes speaking about the incredible mysteries of the Andes and Lake Titicaca. Doing ceremonies with him, learning his teachings, and just being in his presence is such a treasure.

Here are more fun pictures. Glen dressed as a fox, giving me presents from the group on our last night. They gave me the most beautiful necklace and earrings from Lake Titicaca and a recreation of a chulpa from Sillustani, complete with small stones they had all collected for offerings (I didn’t even notice what they were doing!).
Here’s my husband, Richard, at Ollantaytambo. Can you feel the energy of this amazing place? Some people feel that Ollantaytambo is in some ways as incredible as Machu Picchu. The combination of the energy and the water here are so fantastic.
And here’s the group in front of Aramu Muru, the Doorway to Other Dimensions that was discovered by Jorge Luis. To do ceremony at this place with Jorge is so amazing.

And this year one of the members of our group, Jill, played the crystal bowls while we were doing the ceremony there. It was other-worldly.

So, as promised, here are the 3 Very Specific Reasons why you should go on our Peru and Machu Picchu trip:

  1. It’s incredible
  2. It’s amazing
  3. It’s life-changing

Seriously.

Is that not enough? Because it truly is incredible, amazing, and life-changing. And every year I struggle with figuring out how to really convey that to you.

So here’s a little more:

  1. It’s incredible because in two weeks, we connect with that highest part of ourselves in ways which we might have only dreamed of. We not only see these beautiful places (Machu Picchu, Cuzco, the Sacred Valley, Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Sillustani, Lake Titicaca), but we experience them on all the levels — physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual.
  2. It’s amazing because we learn so much, we feel so much, and we have so much fun.
  3. It’s life-changing because you won’t be the same person after this trip — you’ll be happier, more connected, deeper and more loving, as you allow all of this to really sink in.

So I hope those reasons – it’s incredible, amazing, and life-changing – conveys it all to you. If not, there’s lots of information on our website – just click here.

Suzanne says the Peru trip is “amazing” and “life-changing”
“The Sedona Soul Adventures Peru Trip was AMAZING! It is my second Sedona Soul Sacred Travel trip and it, like the first (to Egypt), was life-changing. The magic of Machu Picchu, the peacefulness of Lake Titicaca, the energy of the Apu mountain spirits is not something you can read about – it must be experienced!

On this trip, we had the privilege of being in the presence of Jorge Luis Delgado, our Peruvian Shaman and Chacaruna (bridge person – messenger of light) who is an extraordinary guide, teacher and spiritual Master. I have been on my spiritual journey for approximately 10 years now, and I have learned and experienced many things, but Jorge had an incredible way of saying thing in such simple powerful ways, it was like I was learning them again for the first time.

I experienced with him the power of oral tradition – that it isn’t just the words that he spoke, but it was the energy and intention he imbued into his words that is the specialness of oral tradition. It is that energy which touches you and teaches you. He reaches you heart to heart, rather than from your mind. He led me on a Pilgrimage to my Inner Sun that deepened my commitment to a higher level of consciousness, that increased my understanding of the Cosmos and its wonder, and that fueled my desire to shine brightly in the world. I will be forever grateful for this trip and the positive impact it had on my life.”

Would you like to see “Hamilton” and go to Egypt?

As one of my faithful readers you have a very special opportunity – to see the musical “Hamilton” and go to Egypt! First come, first served!

Are you familiar with the musical “Hamilton”? I saw it when it first came out. I really splurged and spent $750 for one ticket, making it a combination Christmas and birthday present to myself. I don’t think I’ve ever been happier about splurging on something that was just for me. It’s the most amazing theatrical experience I’ve ever had.

Every year when I go to Egypt, I always go to New York (we all meet and leave from JFK) a few days early so that I can run around in New York City and see some shows. My undergraduate degree is in theater and dance, and it’s one of my passions. This past February, I checked on getting “Hamilton” tickets so that my husband Richard could see it (his brother saw it and said it was “transcendent”) when we went to Egypt this past February. I checked on them 6 months in advance, but they were so expensive, we decided not to do it.

Ever since I first saw “Hamilton,” I’ve been on their list as a “Verified Fan,” so I get notices when new blocks of tickets come out. A few weeks ago I got another notice, and then a second notice saying I was part of a pool of special fans who were getting first access to the new block of tickets. They said I could get up to 8 tickets and Richard said, “Let’s get all 8 and make them available for people on the Egypt trip.” Brilliant!

That morning, at 7am sharp, I was on my computer and I was able to purchase 8 tickets for $199 each! Amazing!

So here is your opportunity to check off two bucket list items at once! Seeing “Hamilton” and going to Egypt!

Here’s the deal:

  • The tickets are for Saturday, February 16, 2019 at 8 pm. We leave for Egypt on Monday, February 18, so you’ll be coming in for a few extra days in New York (perfect for seeing the Egyptian exhibit at the Met, running around Times Square, etc.)
  • These are tickets through Ticketmaster, which is the official site for the tickets.
  • $199 is the price that I paid (plus a $15 service fee which was paid to Ticketmaster); this is the price you will pay, so this is not a scalping situation.
  • They are not front row center seats, they are in the Mezzanine, so not premium. However, I went online right now and similar tickets are selling for $449. The highest price was $1,170 which is insane (but people are paying that!).
  • This will be a first come-first served situation. You will need to make your deposit for the Egypt trip ($1000) and pay for the ticket.
To give you more backstory about “Hamilton,” it makes no sense that a musical about one of our Founding Fathers would be so incredible, but it is. It has love, passion, sex, incredible songs, fantastic staging…everything! It won the Tony Award for Best Musical.

So what an incredible combination – I’m so excited to know that we’re seeing “Hamilton” and then going to Egypt! Wow!

Self-criticism is killing you! Here’s what to do

In this issue:

  • Self-criticism is killing you! Here’s what to do
  • Lauren says after her Soul Adventure, “I understand who I am and I love me!”
  • Are you coming to Egypt with me? (February 18-March 3, 2019)

I read the New York Times almost every day over breakfast, and this past week I was completely startled to read an article that sounded a lot like one of my newsletters! They were talking about how damaging self-criticism is, that everyone needs to stop doing it, and they even talked about meditation as being scientifically proven to help! They cited all kinds of scientific studies, saying all the stuff I’ve been writing to you about every week for the past 16 years! Here are the things they said:

Title: Why You Should Stop Being So Hard On Yourself

  • “Self-criticism can take a toll on our minds and bodies.”
  • “Self-criticism can interfere with our productivity.”
  • “Self-criticism can impact our bodies by stimulating inflammatory mechanisms that lead to chronic illness and accelerate aging.”
  • “Self-criticism can have measurably destructive effects, including symptoms of depression, anxiety, substance abuse, negative self-image and, in a particularly vicious twist, decreased motivation and productivity.” (Study published in the Journal of Psychotherapy Integration).
  • “Self-criticism leads people to becoming preoccupied with failure.” (Study published in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin).

The article then goes on to talk about why we do this and the answer is, (in their words) “blame evolution.”

“Our brains equip us with a mechanism to monitor our mind and our behavior, so that when we make errors, we are able to notice the mistake. In order to recover, we first must notice that a mistake has occurred.

Just noticing that we’ve deviated from our expectations or goals — whether that’s eating too much or not completing a daily to-do list — isn’t necessarily the same thing as degrading ourselves into a shame spiral. In some cases, like when our safety or moral integrity are on the line, it’s crucial that our brains tell us good from bad so that we learn the right lessons from our experiences.

But sometimes, assigning negative value to our experiences and behaviors can “ensnare” us into cycles of unhelpful rumination — like when you lie in bed at night, needlessly replaying an awkward interaction or repeatedly revisiting that minor typo. This is where we get into the harmful, counterproductive side of self-criticism.”

So we’re hardwired to do all this self-criticism, it’s very bad for us, it leads to chronic illness and accelerates aging, it interferes with our productivity, and it has “measurably destructive effects” (meaning, they’ve proven this with empirical studies) including depression, anxiety, substance abuse and feelings of failure. WOW! Could that be any worse?

So then, the New York Times asks, “What should I do?” And their one word answer is “Self-Compassion: the practice of being kind and understanding to ourselves when confronted with a personal flaw or failure.” It’s so cute, they then quote a study from the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin entitled “Self-Compassion Promotes Personal Improvement From Regret Experiences via Acceptance,” a clinical study showing that self-compassion and self-acceptance makes you feel better.

They then offer 3 steps to help with Self-Compassion:

  1. Practice self-compassion by staying in the moment, with practices such as meditation (and then they cite yet another study “A wait-list randomized controlled trial of loving-kindness meditation programme for self-criticism” in the Journal of Clinical Psychology & Psychotherapy, so they can prove to their New York Times readers that meditation is actually scientifically proven to work!).
  2. Meet your criticism with kindness (change your self talk from “you’re a loser” to “everybody makes mistakes.”).
  3. Start noticing how you feel better when you are more compassionate with yourself, and then keep doing it over and over again.

When they’re discussing the three steps they say in this article “This is, of course, easier said than done,” and that’s the whole problem, isn’t it?

I’m sorry, but you and I both know that simply telling someone to stop calling themselves a loser and telling them to start meditating is not going to stop a lifetime of self loathing and self-criticism. I had 15 years of therapy and it didn’t stop it, because it didn’t get to the root of what was causing it.

It wasn’t until I came to Sedona and started working with the amazing practitioners here that I really got to the root of all of this. I had done Inner Child work before, I knew I had abandonment issues, but it wasn’t until I did sessions where that abandonment energy was removed and I experienced really, truly loving myself, did all that leave me. I knew that I had negative self talk and I did all kinds of things to catch myself and stop doing it, but it wasn’t until I did a Core Belief Transformation that those old tapes were just eradicated. And it wasn’t until I experienced an Inner Breath Journey that I really felt completely connected to myself, to the Divine, and to everything and everyone around me.

You see, so much of the pain and self-loathing comes from so many deep places and they affect us on all levels —physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. When we have issues of not loving ourselves completely and unconditionally (and I have to say every single person I’ve ever met has that to one degree or another), it shows up on those levels.

On the physical level, we feel insecure about our bodies (haven’t you noticed how even people who are “beautiful” think they aren’t perfect?).

On the emotional level, we deeply feel the self-criticism and it goes to our core.

On the mental level, we’re thinking things like “I’m a loser,” “I’m so stupid,” etc.

On the spiritual level, we actually believe that there’s something wrong with us.

Unless we’re dealing with this on all four levels, it just stays there, stuck and not moving.

So if this is an issue for you, please do something about it. Even the New York Times thinks you should!

Lauren says after her Soul Adventure, “I understand who I am and I love me!”

“I was in a very dark place and my heart knew I needed healing and clarity. My soul adventure provided a safe place to journey through my pain and grief, gave me the tools to continue the healing process, and helped me become balanced and whole. I am no longer hardened by the world – I am soft and gushy! I no longer react in anger or frustration; I can breathe life and peace inside when confronted with difficult situations. I understand who I am and I love me! Thank you Sedona Soul Adventures!”
