Did you watch the Super Bowl? It was absolutely incredible.
Tom Brady was named the MVP, he had a spectacular game. And in so many ways, he’s had a spectacular life — he’s now the all-time most successful quarterback in Super Bowl history, he’s happily married (according to People magazine) to a super model (Giselle Bundchen) and they have two adorable sons. Just the picture of success and wonderful.
And then today I heard on the radio that Tom Brady was No. 199 in the NFL draft that year (2000). He wasn’t picked until the 6th round. That stunned me.
Think about the implications of that. At that critical time in the short life of a professional football player, he was considered not that great. The opinions of the people who “mattered” was that he was not all that worthwhile.
After I heard this, I Googled Tom Brady and found out some really interesting things. When he first went to play in college at the University of Michigan, he was 7th on the depth chart and had to battle for 2 years to even be able to start. During that time (according to Wikipedia), he was feeling such intense frustration and anxiety that he went to a sports psychologist to help him cope. He even thought seriously about leaving Michigan.
Can you imagine if Tom Brady had given in during these critical moments of his life?
Can you imagine if he had decided to throw in the towel?
Can you imagine if he had been guided by the low opinion of others?
What an incredible difference it would have made in his life.
No huge football career.
No super model wife.
Not the same beautiful sons.
Before the NFL draft (while he was still in college), he was an intern at Merrill Lynch.
So if he had thrown in the towel, he would probably have been a stock broker, probably successful, probably would have had a pretty wife and he probably would have had kids. But he would have also probably watched every Super Bowl with a longing and ache that makes me sad just to think about.
These moments where we decide how we’re going to live our lives are so amazingly important. And for so many people, it’s not about making big decisions like “do I leave professional football?” or “do I leave the University of Michigan?”. It’s more insidious than that. It’s about just settling for everything. Just living your life on hold, always telling yourself that things will be different at some point in the future:
– when I lose 20 pounds, then I’ll be happy
– when I find that new relationship, then I’ll be able to blossom
– when I ditch my husband/wife/girlfriend/boyfriend, I’ll really be able to live my life the way I want
– when I pay off my bills and get some money ahead, then I’ll do a Sedona Soul Adventures retreat.
Can you imagine the number of times I’ve heard people (including myself) say some combination of all of the above?
Just understand one thing. Your life is right now. This is it. As I’ve repeated many times from many sources, this is not a dress rehearsal. This is it.
So are you living your life in a happy, ecstatic, blissful way? If so, I am so happy for you and keep on keepin’ on. But if you’re not, please do something about it. Please do something now. Don’t keep putting your life off. It doesn’t work that way.
One of the things I love about the Tom Brady story is that he sought help from a sports psychologist when he was suffering from anxiety and frustration. Are you anxious? Are you frustrated? Maybe it’s time to get some help.
If help is what you’re after, there’s nothing better that I can recommend than doing a Sedona Soul Adventures retreat. As many of you know, we have just started our 13th year of helping individuals and couples to transform their lives and relationships. And I’m still amazed, after all these years and all these thousands of people, at what happens. It is nothing short of miraculous.
And the reason it works is because of our Proven Process where we custom design the retreats for each individual or couple. If you call us and connect with us, one of our Angel Guides will spend time talking with you (or both of you if it’s a couple), really digging deep to figure out what’s going on, what’s happening and what you would love to have happen. They will then design a retreat that is customized just for you, utilizing the most amazing and experienced practitioners in Sedona (we work with over 40!). These are private, one-on-one sessions designed for what YOU need and what YOU want, to bring you into the life and relationship you’ve dreamed about.
