Happy Valentine’s Day! The day of love and lovers.

On this special day, I want to tell you about something I’ve come to believe, just in the past year, about relationships. It’s something that seems like I should have known this all along and when you hear it, you’re probably going to say something like, “Well, of course, Debra, everybody knows that.” 

But just stay with me for a moment because I think you might be surprised to find out that what I think the #1 thing that you either have or don’t have in your relationship, that either makes it or breaks it and that is…

Are you nurturing each other?
Does your beloved nurture you?
And are you nurturing your beloved? 

It seems like a simple question, but it’s not at all. Because it’s about a way of being. It’s a decision you’re making, in every moment.  

Do you truly want to nurture your beloved?  

Do you want to nurture them in the way they want to be nurtured?

Or are you constantly picking at them, criticizing them and thinking nasty thoughts about them?

As most of you know, I was a divorce attorney for over 20 years and now I’ve done couples work in Sedona for almost 20 years. It appears to me that relationships are either mainly in the “I love you” zone or the “You drive me crazy” zone. And it seems like once you’ve rounded the corner into the “you drive me crazy” zone, there’s not much going back unless you really do something about it.

There are basic problems that seem to show up a lot when the nurturing factor isn’t there. And in my experience, there are things that seem unique to women and unique to men. This is also borne out in John Grey’s Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus series of books (so please don’t write me that I’m stereotyping — I’ve watched this for almost 40 years!).

If you’re a woman, do you: 

  • Complain a lot to your partner? 
  • Complain about your partner to other people?
  • Have you taken everything over because he won’t do the stuff you want him to do, in the way you want him to do it?

If you’re a man: 

  • Are you engaging emotionally with your partner? 
  • Are you able to just sit and listen to your partner or do you always give advice, even when it’s not asked for?
  • Are there times when you simply tune your partner out? 

These are all danger signs. Big signals telling you, “STOP! You’ve got to do something here.”

If you’re a woman, stop complaining and stop doing everything because he’s not doing it right.

If you’re a man, start listening and start really engaging emotionally with her.  

The biggest thing, is that you both have to make this basic decision: “I love this person and I want to nurture them.”  

So many books and articles say that communication is the most important thing in a relationship and of course, communication is extremely important, but think about it…

Deciding to truly nurture your partner is at another layer below communication and everything else. If you are in nurturing mode, your communication will always be wonderful, the way you treat them will always be wonderful, and you’ll be having the perfect amount of sex and time together, because it will be based on each of you nurturing the other.

If you’re finding that you’re out of the nurturing zone, you can recognize that and you can do something about it. You literally can shift everything around by making this simple decision:

I want to nurture this person and I’m going to figure out how to do that.

It takes 

  • Willingness 
  • Dropping your resentments about what’s happened in the past 
  • Coming back into loving connection 

Now I know, doing these things is easier said than done. Letting go of past resentments is usually pretty difficult for both parties and that’s usually what’s holding one or both of you back from really getting into and staying in the nurturing zone.  

Or maybe you don’t have clarity about what you truly want. It’s hard to go out of your way to do something for the other person when you’re maybe not 100% sure that you want to be with them.

Our shaman for our Peru trip, Jorge Luis Delgado, is one of the spiritual Masters of our time (June 17-30 – we’ll be at Machu Picchu on the Solstice!!)
 

 

One of the most amazing things about our Machu Picchu and Peru trip is our incredible guide and shaman, Jorge Luis Delgado. I truly believe Jorge is one of the masters on the planet right now.

And to be in his presence for 2 weeks – doing ceremonies, learning his teachings, it’s just so incredible and amazing.

Jorge’s background is so interesting. He grew up on Lake Titicaca with a family of very little means. Amazingly, he became a tour guide throughout Peru and after a few years, became very well known.

Although he grew up in a very spiritual region, he thought that all of the talk about energy and Pachamama (the Earth Mother) was a little bit crazy and not something he was interested in at all.

He became more and more successful, continuing his guiding and eventually owning some hotels in Peru.

And then, suddenly he started having dreams about a portal, a doorway to other dimensions. After having the dream over and over again, he finally went to the elders in his village. They told him that it was his soul purpose to find this doorway.

As his spiritual awakening continued, Jorge spent a great deal of time finding the portal. He describes his spiritual journey and finding the portal in his book, “Andean Awakenings.” On the trip, we will do an incredible ceremony at the doorway.

One of the things I love best about Jorge is that even though he is an incredibly spiritual person, he is also very grounded, very practical and very much a real person. He is married (and his wife is an attorney!) and he has three grown children. His teachings are practical, wonderful and life-changing.

Wishing you a Kick Ass week to start off your Kick Ass New Year!

 
Okay, I know that we all say this each and every year, but really, I just can’t believe that 2018 is over and I really can’t believe how quickly it all went. With everything that has happened this year, it just feels like everything is speeding up to a level that we almost can’t even fathom. And the reason it feels like that is because that’s exactly what’s happening.
 
Everything is speeding up.
 
But here’s the thing – most people seem to talk about that as if it’s a bad thing. I want to talk to you today about how not only is that not a bad thing, it’s a good thing and here are some ways that you can take advantage of everything speeding up.
There are all kinds of scientific explanations of things that are going on right now, including an increase in the Earth’s frequency, called the Schuman Resonance. I’m not going to go into all the scientific stuff, I just want to talk about that feeling that most of us have, that everything is speeding up and going faster, is true. We experience it all the time with our technology, but we also just experience it in our lives, most notably with how quickly time seems to be passing.
 
I want to encourage you to use this energy for yourself for this New Year, to harness it and utilize it. Instead of resisting it, use it. Befriend it.  
 
So, how can you do that? The first way is to get clear on what you want.
I’m not talking about regular New Year’s Resolutions, which are usually too unspecific, too grandiose and not realistic. 
I’m talking about Realistic Attainable Measurable Goals. Start by going through all of the important areas of your life:

 

 

  1. Body
  2. Work
  3. Relationships
  4. Money

Get laser-focused on what you want this year. Work on all of these if you’d like, or maybe just take one or two to work on – that increases the likelihood of success. Really focus – that’s what will make all the difference.

After you have gotten laser-focused on exactly what you want to accomplish, then write this down somewhere where you will see it every day, so you can keep feeding it into your subconscious. Studies have shown that just by writing it down, you increase the likelihood of it happening by 50%… 50% just by writing it down!

Next, develop your game plan. What do you need to do on a monthly, weekly and daily basis to make this happen?

Some goals lend themselves better than others to this. But for example, if you want to write a book by the end of the year, you’re going to need to write X number of chapters each month to make that happen.

So, develop your game plan and then break it down into monthly, weekly and daily chunks.

Finally, and here is my favorite part – the part that I think is the most important one and the one that I know will give you the most bang for your buck: Spend three minutes each day Meditating about these things, Fantasizing about these things and Feeling and Knowing that they are happening.

Here’s the best way to do this:

Set the timer on your smartphone for 3 minutes. Doing it for only 3 minutes will help insure you do this every day. And setting it on your timer will stop you from thinking about how much time is left.

Close your eyes and put your hand over your heart with the intention of bringing in Heart Coherence. It’s not necessary for you to completely understand what that means and I’ll be talking about it in a later video, so for now, just set that intention.  

Start breathing deeply into your heart. Think of something or feel something that makes you feel good.

Feel gratitude. Feel love for someone. Think about your dog or your cat – that always works for me.

Just do something briefly that is going to bring you into a peaceful, easy feeling.

Now start thinking about the things you want to have happen and start fantasizing about these things, and feeling and knowing that they are in the process of happening. See the energy, this faster, higher vibration energy that is speeding up everything on the planet right now, and see it feeding these goals and desires. See it amp them up as they come to you faster.

Next, see yourself as if these things have already happened. What do you look like? How do you talk? How does your body move? Feel the excitement that you’ll feel as they start to come true. Feel the gratitude that you’ll feel as they start to come true.

Ask yourself the question “What do I need to know right now?” Breathe and listen to the answers.  

Just as the timer goes off, take a final deep breath and feel the knowing, the absolute knowing that this is happening. Open your eyes and write down any answers, thoughts or ideas that came to you.  

Consistency is the Key. If you do this consistently, and I mean every day, I think you will be amazed at what will happen.

Because you are being focused and you’re energizing your goals and desires with this speeded up energy that is on the planet right now. And even better, you’re utilizing that energy to bring your goals and desires to you even more quickly.
So that’s my New Year gift for you. I hope you’ll do it and I’d love to hear your success stories as they happen.

“I was fighting a battle of fear…”

I received the most beautiful message from someone who did a Soul Adventure with us earlier this month.

Oh Teresa, that just brought tears to my eyes. It’s so interesting because when people come to us telling us that they are in pain, we always tell them that we aren’t doctors, we don’t have doctors on staff, and so dealing directly with physical issues is something we don’t do. But I know in my own life, that there is always an underlying emotional and spiritual aspect and that if those can be dealt with, it’s amazing what happens.

For most of us, our pain is really about our emotional and spiritual pain. For Teresa, it was her fear. And now she doesn’t feel fearful, she feels strong and confident and whole. What a beautiful transformation!

Using Gratitude to Bring in Everything You Want in Your Life

Why is Gratitude so powerful?
Gratitude brings us into a higher energetic vibration.
When we are feeling negative emotions – anger, frustration, jealousy – we are vibrating at a much lower frequency and worse, we are attracting to ourselves exactly what we don’t want and bringing in more and more of it. Experiencing true gratitude is one of the easiest and fastest ways to bring yourself back into a higher and faster energetic vibration that will then attract everything you DO want into your life. This is what I call the Gateway of Gratitude — the process of utilizing Gratitude as a doorway or portal to bring yourself into alignment with what you want:

 

 

  • Love
  • Abundance
  • Vibrant Health
  • Spiritual Connection

What do you want? Do you want your relationship to be more loving, more expansive, more fulfilling? Do you have a situation with a friend, a co-worker or a mate that is causing you to stay in disconnection? Are you having a health challenge?
Use the Gateway of Gratitude to change it around and to bring in exactly what you want. More love, more abundance, a healthy body. This simple process can literally work miracles in your life!
Here’s the process:
For the next 30 days, take 3 minutes (that’s all!) each morning and write 5 things that you are truly grateful for about the person or the situation. For example, if you are having difficulties in your relationship, write 5 things you truly appreciate about the other person. It must be things that are true for you. So, if it’s something about your mate it could be:

  1. I love his/her beautiful blue eyes.
  2. I love that he/she likes dogs.
  3. I love that he/she is good at his job.
  4. I love that he has things that he enjoys, like baseball.
  5. I love that he/she loves our children.

You can also write about things in your life that you are grateful for. The easiest way into the Gateway of Gratitude is to be thankful for what you already have, for what is. And there are many, many things in your life to be grateful for: the sun is shining, the earth is spinning on its axis, you are alive, you are breathing.

After you have written down your 5 things, take just a moment to close your eyes, take a deep breath and truly FEEL the gratitude for this person or situation. The more you can infuse emotion into the process, the faster you will move into the Gateway of Gratitude. If you find you can’t muster the feeling, it’s okay, just breathe and let it go. As you move more and more into the process, it will start to come. Don’t force it.

You can repeat things you have written again, especially towards the end of the 30 days. Just make sure you are writing things you truly believe.

Don’t tell the other person (or anyone else for that matter) that you are doing this. The magic lies in what you will start to see happening in just a short time — as little as 3 days!

To begin, get yourself a little spiral notebook, a new one that you can pick up for 50¢ at Walgreens. Of course, you can get a fancy journal, but all you need is a new book for this new life you are creating. I prefer a small spiral notebook because you can easily carry it around with you and write down more “Attitudes of Gratitude” as you think of them during the day. It’s also wonderful throughout the process to go back and read what you have written in the prior days and to watch how your Gratitude and appreciation continue to deepen.

There also seems to be something more powerful about actually writing the “High 5” in your own handwriting, rather than typing it on a computer. You are infusing your own self, your own energy into the process.

The key is consistency. Go into the Gateway of Gratitude every single day for 30 days with no interruption. Taking only 3 minutes is a good way to get yourself to do it every day, so that you are not spending a lot of time.
When you have another issue that comes up, start another 30 day process. Or better still, use the process consistently each day to bring yourself into connection.

I have used this process in my own life and with my coaching clients for years. My favorite results (and the most typical) are when my client will say something like, “It’s so amazing. My husband has suddenly become so much more loving. Nothing has changed, except that I’ve been doing this process.”

I had a coaching client a few years ago who contacted me because she knew I had Sedona Soul Adventures and she knew I had been a divorce attorney for 20 years, and she wanted me to coach her through her divorce. We started the coaching with me asking her why she wanted a divorce. Everything she was telling me seemed rather minor, certainly not enough to break up a family over. I started talking to her about the things she actually like about her husband. I had her start a Gratitude Journal that day.

What had started out as a 2 year divorce coaching process (because that’s how long her lawyer told her it was going to take) ended in 60 days. She started the Gratitude journal about her husband and everything switched around – her husband became more loving, more attentive, more caring, they started having great sex again…everything switched around and that was over 5 years ago.

I asked Linda if she would write a little bit about herself and the book:

shattered illusionsPart memoir, Linda Gunter’s journey focused on personal growth. The book begins when she volunteered after Hurricane Katrina, in a disaster relief kitchen in St. Bernard Parish, LA. This experience causes her to question her traditional career path and awakened a desire to live a more meaningful life. 

The author based many life-changing decisions on her intuition; she leaves a government job and moves from DC to Seagrove, NC. She decides to convert her new home (a former Mill) into a B&B and open an herb store. She studies herbs, meditation, flower essence energy work, reiki, becomes a licensed wedding officiant.

Her two Sedona Soul Adventures and two weekend seminars (over the space of 5 years) led to many personal insights, an ability to reflect on her problems and try new tools to explore her psyche. Thinking about spirituality as an energy process opened her mind to other practices. 

She met Jorge Luis Delgado at the Sedona Soul Adventures workshop and decided to take the Machu Picchu trip after she worked in Tokyo on the Fukushima nuclear accident. The two weeks she spent with Jorge and a group of like minded souls was life changing, leading to a true commitment to the road less traveled no matter where it led. 

Linda researches cognitive theory, moral and behavioral psychology and finally concludes her mind is unreliable, much of her decision-making has been unconscious based upon past limited experience and thus faulty. She fails at being an entrepreneur and almost loses her home and possessions. 

linda ssa gradHer parents rescue her financially, but she has to overcome depression and loneliness. She slowly regains self-confidence by focusing on being of service to others and utilizing the spiritual skills she has learned over the years. She decides to study Neurosculpting and becomes certified to teach this visualization meditation.

Linda has published this book, Shattered Illusions: Reflections On My Disasterous Mid-life Crisis, with the hope of helping others avoid her mistakes.

Today, I’m going to talk to you about How To Discover Patterns That Are Hurting Your Life.Back in 2016, I wrote a book that became an International #1 Best Seller called The Journey To Happy. I’m going to be talking to you in a number of videos about the ideas and processes that I talk about in my book.
Have you ever looked at your life and thought, “Why did I do that?”

Or have you looked back over your life and noticed that you seem to do the same things over and over again, making some bad choices over and over again?
I was a divorce attorney for over 20 years and one of the things that happened during that time is that I had some clients that I did 3 divorces for! And the amazing thing was, what I noticed is that they were marrying the same person over and over again, they just had a different name. And what I also discovered is that if their father was an alcoholic, they would end up marrying alcoholics, or if their mother was withholding and couldn’t express love, they would marry someone who was – you guessed it – withholding and couldn’t express love. I now see this all the time with people who come here to Sedona Soul Adventures to do our retreats.
It doesn’t make any sense when we think about it rationally, but when you think about it from an emotional and spiritual standpoint, it makes perfect sense. With a childhood like that, you take on the belief that you’re not loveable and your soul is looking to heal that wound so it finds someone to bring that up for healing. You keep finding people that bring up that old wound of making you feel like you’re not loveable. It’s a vicious cycle if you don’t do something about it.
So the key for this, is to discover the patterns that you took on as a child that are still affecting you.
This process is quick and it is so enlightening. When I first did it, I couldn’t believe it. Here’s what you do:
Look at the top 6 areas of your life and look at how these same things were for your parents:

  1. Life
  2. Spirituality
  3. Work
  4. Money
  5. Relationships
  6. Body

Here were my answers when I first did this…
Life
My Parents: Life is hard
Me: Life is hard
Spirituality
My Parents: Believed in God
Me: Believe in a Higher Power
Work
My Parents: You have to work really hard and do things you don’t like to make money and support yourself.
Me: I was working really hard and doing things I didn’t like (practicing law) to make money and support myself.
Money
My Parents: Made a lot of money. Spent a lot of There was never enough. My mother would sit at the dining room table and write out checks to pay bills and say, “There’s not enough!”
Me: Made a lot of money. Spent a lot of money. Never enough. Amazingly, I would also sit at the dining room table and write out checks to pay bills and say, “There’s not enough!”
Relationships
My Parents: Marriage is hard. Parents are distant, Father is working nights and completely unavailable.
Me: I was already divorced by this time. I kept finding unavailable men. My first boyfriend was away at college. My first husband was in law school and studying all the time. My second husband was from Holland and we had a long distance relationship until we got married. After that marriage ended, I had a relationship with an American who lived in Tokyo.
Body
My Parents: My mother was constantly dieting, and as my father aged, he became morbidly obese. He would go on diets and lose 30-40 pounds and then would go off the diet and gain it all back and more.
Me: I was put on my first diet when I was 12, even though I wasn’t fat. I would continually go on diets and lose 20 pounds, and then I would go off the diet and gain it all back and more.
Although I thought I was completely different from my parents, I was completely like them in terms of how everything in my life was manifesting. When I realized that I was even sitting at the dining room table writing out checks to pay bills and saying, “There’s not enough,” I was totally, completely stunned. These patterns are set in ways that we don’t even realize until we start to consciously look at them.

Take ten minutes to think about how your parents, teachers, or others (who really influenced you as a child) interacted with the world. For most people, it will be your parents. How did they “do” money? How did they “do” food? How did they “do” relationships?
Remember, this is not about blame; this is about raising your conscious awareness. As I’ve said, we are creating our reality in every moment. I know I created these parents and I created these patterns. This is not my parents’ fault. I chose (unconsciously) to take on their thoughts and perceptions. This was one of the most valuable processes I ever did in my life, so I invite you to do it now.
Of course, now that you have gained this awareness, there are steps that you can take immediately. For me, one of the first things I did was to stop writing checks at the dining room table! I also broke up with the guy in Tokyo.
For most of us though, just having the awareness of these patterns isn’t enough to change them. It’s certainly a start and I really want you to do this exercise so that you know this much, and there are simple things that you can start to do to change some of these things around. But usually, the patterns are much deeper and most of us need help in dealing with them and turning them around.

This Will be Powerful for You (4 Amazing Questions)

I was noodling around in my computer earlier this week and found a questionnaire I had completed back in 2012. Wow – that seems so far away!

I had gone to a workshop in California that was a business workshop, not a spiritual workshop (oh the days when we could just jump on a plane and easily go to California and sit in a hotel conference room with a thousand other people and think nothing of it). I answered these 4 Questions that turned out to be highly spiritual, incredibly insightful, and tremendously helpful.

I was amazed to discover that everything I said I wanted in my answers had actually happened!

I think if you take 10 minutes to answer these questions, it will be tremendously profound for you.

1. What’s frustrating you the most right now?
Isn’t this a great question? It really gets to the heart of what’s eating you. I know for so many people who come to us, they feel like they’re at the end of their rope, some life situation is driving them crazy, or worse, they feel they are not living their best life or their relationship isn’t giving them all that they want. That’s got to be one of the most frustrating things in the world, to have this feeling that you are capable of living a happy, joyful, wonderful life, but you just don’t have the tools to do it. That’s exactly how I felt before I first came to Sedona.

2. What do you want to have happen this year?
Wow, doesn’t that just zero in on it? I love this question. It makes it so immediate. So what do you want to have happen this year? Wouldn’t it be great to have something really amazing and incredible happen? What would that be for you? You’ve still got 4 months left this year to make it happen, a lot can happen in 4 months.

3. What have you tried in the past that’s worked and what have you tried in the past that hasn’t worked?
This one really hits close to home for me because before I came to Sedona for the first time 21 years ago I had read every book, done so many group retreats, done so many workshops, done therapy, and nothing ever really seemed to help. It wasn’t until I was doing one-on-one private sessions that were focused completely on me with the Masters here in Sedona that I really got to the heart of what I needed.

4. What would it take for you to double your happiness during the next year?
I love this one so much because it takes out the complaining aspect of everything that’s wrong and puts it right into your lap. What would double your happiness during this next year? It’s especially fun to answer this question from the standpoint of really knowing that it can happen!

How Self Love Affects Every Part of Your Life [and How to Get It]

I’ve been working with people for over 40 years, first as a family law attorney and now with Sedona Soul Adventures, and one of the things I find that is most important if you want to have a truly happy life, is to truly develop self love. As I talk about in the video, if you don’t love yourself, that’s going to show up in every area of your life.

One of my favorite parts of this video is the quote from the Buddha:

“You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire Universe, deserve your love and affection.”

One of the biggest challenges that so many people who come to us face, is lack of self-love. And I have to say it’s a challenge that I’ve really had to work with in my own life. It’s just so pervasive.
 
If this is something you’ve been feeling, here are some possible reasons why and how it shows up…
 
For most of us, something happened in our childhood. Someone we cared about, usually a parent, says something that we take on — you’re stupid, there’s something wrong with you, you’ll never amount to anything.
 
You maybe have a Faulty core belief – deep inside, you believe you’re not okay, or that you’re not good enough, that usually leads to Negative self talk – when something happens do you find yourself saying things “I’m so stupid,” or “what’s wrong with me?”
 
Are any of these true for you?
 
You see, when we look a little deeper, we uncover what’s really going on and then when you go deeper still, you see the compound affects showing up in many areas of your life.
If you think there’s something wrong with you, if you think you’re not good enough, or if you think you’re not enough, then it’s going to affect all the areas of your life, what I call the Fab Four:  

  1. Relationships
  2. Work
  3. Money
  4. Health

What are the ways you can see how this problem is affecting these areas of your life?

  • Relationships – If you think you’re not enough, you’re going to attract relationships where people don’t really love you or take care of your needs.
  • Work – If you think you’re not enough, you’re never going to be able to truly succeed.
  • Money – It’s hard, probably impossible, to bring in a lot of abundance if you think you’re not enough.
  • Health – And what I find is that people who think they’re not enough, typically don’t take very good care of themselves, and it seems to be at the root of many health issues.

If you don’t love yourself, that’s going to sabotage every area of your life.

We had a woman here a few months ago who had been placed for adoption when she was born – her mother was a drug user and she was taken away at birth. She had this very deep sense of, “what’s wrong with me that even my own mother didn’t want me?” And of course that wasn’t true, her mother knew she couldn’t care for her properly.

But then she was adopted by two parents who were constantly upset with her that she wasn’t doing well enough in school, they criticized her constantly, all she ever heard was that she wasn’t good enough. She got married very young to get out of the house, married a man who mistreated her (because if you don’t love yourself, you can’t bring in someone who’s truly going to love you) and got divorced at a young age when the abuse got too bad. By the time she came to us, all the areas of her life were messed up — she was in another bad relationship, she hated her work, she hated her body.

So what can YOU do to begin to start loving yourself just a little bit?

Take yourself off the hook – look around, are you really that much worse than anyone else?

Stop comparing yourself to everyone else, that’s a recipe for disaster.

Start noticing your self talk and the way you talk to yourself. Think about it. You probably speak more kindly to your dog or your cat than you do to yourself.

As the Buddha said, “You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire Universe, deserve your love and affection.”

Are you going to argue with Buddha?

These are great places to start, and as you work through these, you’ll begin to uncover other ways to help you find your way and overcome the lack of self-love.

Wishing you a week filled with love and nurturing!

Today I’m going to talk to you about How to get what you want in your relationship. If you’ve been following me for a while, you probably already know that I was a divorce attorney in Omaha, Nebraska for over 20 years. And then in 2002, I started Sedona Soul Adventures, where we do retreats for individuals and couples. So I spent 20 years divorcing people, and now I’ve spent almost 20 years helping people stay together. 

Our record for helping people with their relationships is absolutely stunning and it’s because we’re able to dig deep to get at the root of the problem, and sometimes the problem is not what either person thinks it is. A big piece of this is finding out what each of you need in your relationship and deciding if you are willing to give it to the other person?  

We had a couple here last year and it was stunning. The husband had an affair and on the surface it looked like just one of the usual situations that sadly we see a lot of. They had grown apart and the husband, I’ll call him Mike, had an affair. Even though he said he loved his wife, I’ll call her Linda, and he adored their two children, the affair had happened and it had gone on longer than Mike had originally told Linda. Linda, of course, was devastated and really, really angry and felt like she could never trust him again. And of course, those reactions are completely natural.  

Mike’s father was a womanizer and his mother left his father when he was very young. He and his mother went to live with relatives in a household that was basically full of men-hating women. Mike grew up hearing about how terrible men are, how you can’t trust them and they’re all womanizers, and he grew up afraid that he would be like that too. But he wasn’t, he’d been married for 20 years, had never had the urge to have an affair and was even saying to us over and over again, “I can’t believe I did that, I can’t believe I jeopardized my whole life” like that. 

Linda grew up in a family where her mother constantly criticized her father and so Linda thought that’s how you communicate with a husband. You get him to do what you want by criticizing him.  

We discovered through our process that the needs that Mike has are Words of Praise and Gifts.

At this point, this might sound to some of you like the Love Languages work that is out there, which I like, but what we do is very different and very specific for each person. 

We discovered through our process that the needs that Linda has are Listening, Conversation and Protection.

Which also made sense because Linda’s mother also criticized Linda and her father would never stand up for her with her mother, so Linda grew up believing, “I have no one to protect me.” 

So Linda needs a man who will talk to her and protect her. And we quickly discovered that Mike just simply wasn’t talking to her and really hadn’t been throughout their marriage and she was, quite understandably, upset about it. And of course, the affair was the ultimate betrayal, how could anyone feel protected by someone who had betrayed them?

Mike didn’t want to have a lot of conversations with Linda because she was constantly criticizing him. She thought she was “helping him” by telling him what to do and how to do it, but it all just felt like criticism to him and Linda got it, how it would feel like that to him. 

So here we have a man whose most basic relationship need is Words of Praise and all he’s getting is Criticism. We have a woman whose most basic relationship need is Conversation and we have a man who won’t talk to her.

But then here’s the kicker:

When we discovered that Mike’s other need was Gifts, we asked him about that. He started tearing up as he told us that he never got gifts when he was growing up, not even for his birthday.  

And guess who gives him gifts? The woman that he had an affair with. And guess what else she gave him? Words of Praise. His other deepest need. It wasn’t about sex, it was about him feeling valued. 

When Mike and Linda realized they were living in this crazy, vicious cycle of he needs Words of Praise and she’s criticizing him, and she needs Conversation and he doesn’t want to talk to her because he doesn’t want to get criticized…and how this had much more to do with their childhoods than with what is going on now…and it’s just this crazy thing that keeps on happening and keeps on going back and forth until someone finally says, “STOP! Wait a minute. He needs Words of Praise and Gifts, are you willing to give that to him?”

And we say to him, “She needs conversation and protection, are you willing to give that to her?” It was harder for him to say yes, because they had 20 years of not really talking to each other. But when she saw him tear up over the gifts thing, her heart just melted. When he got that she was just doing what her mother had taught her to do, he got it. They both got it — that you have to give the other one what they need, not what you think they need, but what they need and want, you have to nurture them in what they need. 

If you’re not willing to do that, you don’t have a relationship. And you certainly don’t have a relationship that’s going to last for very much longer. 

Now understand, I’m not saying that what Mike did was okay, far from it. Having an affair is simply not okay, but when Linda understood all this, she really got it, her heart opened and she was able to forgive him and love him again. 

So How about you?  

Do you know what you want in a relationship? I’ve been surprised to discover that most people don’t. 

Do you know (really) what your partner wants? 

Do you care? That’s actually the most important one, because if you aren’t willing to give your partner what they want, things aren’t going to work. 

Have you spent any time thinking about how your parents were with each other because that can be really telling.

Were they happy?
Were they loving with each other?  
Did they talk?  
Did they fight?  
What did they teach you? (Even though they probably didn’t think they were teaching you.) 

But even more deeply, how was your childhood? 

Did you feel loved?
Did you feel valued?
Were you criticized?
Did you grow up believing there’s something wrong with you?  

Sadly, for many of us, things happen to make us believe that we’re not enough, that we don’t deserve love and then we bring all that into our relationships and it comes out in all kinds of crazy ways, like having affairs and mistreating the person we’re supposed to love. 

What do you really want? 

What do you crave? 

What do you need?
