Petra was one of the most important cities on the ancient trading routes of the Middle East back in the 1200’s. And then it faded into obscurity and for many years people in the West thought it didn’t even exist, that it was a kind of Shangri La that was mystical and not real.
But in the 1800’s a Westerner disguised himself as a Bedouin and was taken there and re-discovered "The Lost City" and it’s now become a Unesco World Site, because it is so extraordinary.
Do you remember the ending of the movie “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade”? This is the one where Sean Connery plays Indiana’s father. They are taken to this mystical place where the Holy Grail has been kept for millennia (that part isn't true).
At the very end of the movie, we see them riding off into the sunset away from this incredible place. Here’s a picture that shows the amazing stone structure, and why Petra is called “the Rose City”.
In addition to Petra, we’ll visit Wadi Rum, the place that is also known as “Mars on Earth”. The landscape here is so striking and so incredible that many movies about Mars have been made here, including The Martian (2015), The Last Days on Mars (2013), Red Planet (2000), Mission to Mars (2000), etc.
Many other films also have been filmed in Wadi Rum, like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Prometheus and Lawrence of Arabia. The real Lawrence of Arabia made his camp here during his campaigns.
Wadi Rum is huge, over 183,000 acres!
We will also visit the ancient city of Jerash.
Jerash is considered one of the largest and most well-preserved sites of Roman architecture in the world outside Italy.
Jerash is sometimes referred to as the "Pompeii of the Middle East" because of its size, the extent of excavation and the incredible level of preservation.
We'll also make our way to the incredible Dead Sea and on the way we'll visit the Al Karak Castle, a very famous castle from the time of the Crusaders.
Our resort is right on the Dead Sea and we'll spend an entire day there - definitely have a massage and a mud bath and have the experience of floating in the Sea (you float because of the high salt content)!

If you’re on our Second Egypt Tour (March 9-22), you’ll fly into Cairo (departing JFK on March 3) and be met by Guardian Travel at the airport and taken directly to our hotel, the 5 star Le Meridien Cairo Airport Hotel where you’ll meet other members of the group for dinner.
If you’re on our First Egypt Tour (February 20-March 5), you’ll spend the last night of the tour at the famous Mena House Hotel and we’ll meet the rest of the Jordan group at the airport the next day.

We’ll get up early, have breakfast and then fly to Amman (1 hour flight) and then drive to Wadi Rum, where we’ll tour this spectacular place and then drive on to our beautiful hotel in Petra, the Movenpick Petra hotel.

If you’re part of our First Egypt Tour, you’ll fly home; if you’re with our Second Egypt Tour, we’ll get to sleep in, have breakfast and meet the rest of our group when they arrive at the airport at noon, then it’s on to the incredible Mena House for the start of our tour!
