Another tip on living your best life

July 26, 2024

Last week I sent you a video about how the first 90 minutes of your day are the most important, because it's when you are most productive, you have the most focus, you have the highest level of energy and the highest level of will power.

If you missed it, you can find it here.

Here's another tip that will really help and you'll see how these two things can have a huge impact when you take them together.

Wake up

Studies are showing most people are distracted an average of 2 hours per day (distracted by things like constantly checking their phone, texts and emails, scrolling through social media, watching funny videos on YouTube, joining in gossip, etc.) and it takes 21 minutes to get re-focused on what they were doing before they got distracted.

Most thought leaders these days are in agreement that FOCUS is the most important thing we need in our lives - that it’s even more important than intelligence and creativity.

When we’re unfocused, we’re scattered, we’re adrift and the worst part is, we feel like we are never accomplishing anything. It’s a terrible feeling.

So let me ask you - What do you do with the first 90 minutes of your day (that's what we talked about last week) and throughout the day, are you prone to distraction? Do you...

  • Check your email, texts, and social media constantly? (Do you have special dings for notifications? That will definitely distract you!)
  • Spend a lot of time on Facebook, Instagram, and/or TikTok?
  • Spend a lot of time on TikTok or YouTube, watching videos of cute kittens and puppies?
  • cute puppy videos

Don’t get me wrong, videos of cute kittens and puppies and laughing babies make me happy. And I’m not perfect in this area — It’s so easy for me to get distracted, especially when I’m writing this newsletter!

All of a sudden I’ll get a notification of something on Facebook. I’ll go to check that, and then on the sidebar I’ll see that some celebrity has done something outrageous and I’ll give myself a guilty pleasure and click on that, and then on the sidebar there’s some YouTube video that sounds especially interesting and uplifting, so I’ll click on that until I finally Stop!

And when you realize that it takes 21 minutes (!) to really get back into what you were doing, it’s easy to see how we can go through an entire day feeling scattered.

I’m not saying don’t go on Instagram or TikTok anymore. And I’m not saying don’t go on YouTube — there are lots and lots of inspiring videos on YouTube (including lots from me!).

What I am saying is that living your life with FOCUS will make you feel better... it will make every area of your life feel better.

And isn’t that what it’s all about?

We had someone here for a retreat a while ago who came to us because she felt like her life was out of control. Sarah said her brain felt scattered, she couldn’t accomplish anything at work because she was constantly distracted, she felt somewhat anxious all the time, she had trouble sleeping because her mind was always racing, and it was making her miserable.

Every area of her life was suffering, from her work to her finances to her relationships. Because that’s what happens — when we have problems that are affecting us deeply, they end up affecting every area of our lives.

In talking with her, we found out that she grew up in a household where she never felt like she was good enough. No matter what she did, it wasn’t enough. Her father had left her mother very unexpectedly when she was five and in one of her sessions, we discovered that her little five year old self was still blaming herself for her father leaving (even though the real reason had been sexual infidelity and emotional abuse, but when we’re five years old, we don’t understand things rationally).

Her father leaving had created this huge empty hole in her heart and soul — she was always waiting for the other shoe to drop... for something to go wrong. And when we hold ourselves in the energy that things are going to go wrong, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy — and then things always go wrong!

We did some sessions that cleared up this huge empty hole. In her breath work, she had a direct experience of the Divine Mother and felt the first real love she had ever felt in her life. She felt her angels around her and knew she wasn’t alone. She came back into connection on all levels (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual) and realized she didn’t have anything to be afraid of.

When I spoke with her, I recommended that she do the following:

    1. Start her day with meditation.
    2. Start her work day doing one thing that, if she accomplished it, it would make her feel like she had accomplished something for that day.

A few months later I got an email from her and she can’t quite believe how much things have changed in such a short period of time. She told me, “I feel whole for the first time in my life.”

Since she’s been home, she’s continued to do the breath journey and meditate. She told me, “Every time I meditate, I feel like I’m back in Sedona and I just feel so peaceful.”

She said that starting her day with doing the one thing that will make her feel like she’s accomplishing something has been magical. She said she’s never felt so focused in her life. Her scattered brain is a thing of the past.

She’s doing exactly what all the studies say: she’s utilizing the beginning of her day to do things that make her feel really good and she’s staying focused until she does them.

So it’s not magic - it’s coming back into connection and staying there.

    Do you feel unfocused?
    Do you feel scattered?
Does your mind race while you lie in bed trying to get to sleep?
    Do you feel anxious?
Do you constantly feel like you should be doing more and more?

What I’ve found in over 22 years of working with people here, is that these feelings are usually on top of something deeper. When we find what that is, clear them and bring people back into connection, everything changes.
