What knocks you off your game? - Sedona Soul Adventures

What knocks you off your game?

We were watching a basketball game last week and at one point the announcer said “he’s really on his game”. And it was so true — he was jumping, he was scoring, he was rebounding, it was a joy to see.
And, of course, it wasn’t just the physical aspects of all this. There was an energy, a joy, a confidence, an ease that went with this that was so beautiful.
Think about those times when you just feel wonderful for no reason. You just feel good, the sun is shining, it just feels great to be alive. Nothing in particular has happened, you just feel great. It’s thrilling.
So why don’t we feel that way all the time? What happens to knock us off our game? What’s happening to knock you off your game?
For some of us, something really serious is happening — death of loved ones, serious illness, constant money trouble, big problems in a relationship. Serious issues like that can suck the joy right out of us.
But for most of us, we don’t have really serious issues going on. We just let everyday life knock us off our game.
In thinking about this, I’m realizing that for me the things thatif keep me out of really being joyful all the time are overwhelm and what is universally referred to as stinkin’ thinkin’.
Let’s talk about overwhelm first. I’ll justify it by saying I’m busy and I lead a full life. But that’s actually a very wonderful thing. Why do we allow ourselves to get so caught up with everything? Going to LA this week for Thanksgiving was so much fun, but it essentially condensed my week down to 2 days. There were so many times when I had to stop myself and say “wait a minute”, “breathe”, “this is the holiday, it’s supposed to be fun!”
How did your holiday go? Was it crazy and chaotic? Or warm and wonderful? We lose sight of the fact that we have the ability to make it one way or the other. We get to choose how we feel. We get to decide how we’re reacting to everything.
The other thing that knocks me off my game is stinkin’ thinkin’. Even after everything that I write about and talk about and coach people about, I still sometimes find myself going down that road where I’m thinking about something that doesn’t make me feel good. And once you start down that road, it always just gets worse and worse.
Why do we do that? Why do I do that? It’s amazing to me after everything I know about turning those things around, that I still allow myself to do that. One of the earliest self development books I ever read was “You Can’t Afford the Luxury of a Negative Thought” by Peter McWilliams. The title says it all. We simply can’t allow ourselves to go there. And if we’ve started going there, we have to do something — Anything — to stop continuing down that path.
So what are the things that knock you off your game? Do you let yourself get overwhelmed? Do you sometimes allow yourself the luxury of a negative thought? Do you allow everyday life to keep you from feeling good?
The good news is there are so many things you can do to turn these around. An excellent one is to remind yourself that the things you’re worried about probably aren’t that huge in the large scheme of things. Are you worried and concerned and using your precious life force energy thinking about something that is tremendously important, or are you just continuing a familiar pattern of low level worry? You can stop that by becoming more conscious about what you’re thinking about.
Staying in the present moment is another effective means of doing this. Stop worrying about the future and regretting the past. All that we have is here and now. Let go of thoughts that are future oriented or past oriented.
And since we just celebrated Thanksgiving, I’ll put in another plug for gratitude. Feeling truly grateful for everything that you have in your life is the easiest way to stay on top of your game than anything I know of.
If you really want to amp up your game I would invite you to come to Sedona and do a Sedona Soul Adventures retreat. Many times we don’t know where to start in the letting go process and we need help. Sometimes we need to come into compassion and love for ourselves. Nothing will do that faster and more dramatically than a Sedona Soul Adventure.
