Before You File for Divorce, Ask Yourself This
I’m going to say something that might surprise you, coming from someone who spent years as a divorce attorney.
I’m not against divorce.
Richard and I have both been divorced. And as painful as it was, we’re grateful for it — because we never would have found each other otherwise.
Sometimes divorce truly is the right choice.
What I’m against is making one of the biggest decisions of your life while you’re emotionally flooded. Lonely, hurt, resentful, exhausted. And mistaking that flood for clarity.
Because here’s what I’ve watched happen too many times.
People leave. And they carry the very same pattern straight into the next relationship. The face changes. The pain doesn’t.
So before you make a permanent decision, I want to give you something to sit with.
Not to talk you out of anything. Just to help you choose from clarity instead of fear.
Find a quiet moment. Take a breath. And ask yourself:
If I left today, would I be taking these same patterns with me?
Have we identified and worked on our Core Wounds, or are we still fighting because of them? (And do you even know what your Core Wounds are?)
Am I reacting from pain, or choosing from clarity?
Have we truly learned how to repair after conflict?
Is there emotional safety here, or ongoing harm?
Have we sought support that addresses the deeper wounds and the nervous system, not just communication?
Am I staying out of fear, or leaving out of fear?
And then the hardest question of all:
If nothing changed in my partner, but I fully healed my own gunk, would I still want to go?
Sit with that last one.
Because that question is where your real power lives.
It’s the difference between running from the gunk and clearing it. And when you clear it, one of two things happens. Both of them are good.
Can you imagine waking up next to the same person you were ready to leave — and feeling the love you had for each other in the very beginning?
Some couples, certain they were finished, come back from the brink and discover a connection, an honesty, and a passion they didn’t KNOW was possible.
And some people walk out of marriages that were truly over. But they walk out with their hearts intact, because they cleared enough gunk to choose from clarity instead of fear.
Either way, you stop repeating the story.
